Its a new 8 core mac, with 8GB ram inside, with bootcamp we run Windows 32 (2002) and max with vray. The memory only shows 2GB?

On the larger scenes I'm getting alot of crashing, max will close without warning after doing say 6 little test renders. Resulting in lost work and frustration.

Is there a quick fix for this? something I need to tweek? Or is it a case of bring on Vista 64?

Any advice very welcome

64-bit would be needed to use all the RAM.

Is the transition to 64 bit a smooth one? What with all the driver issues I've heard about I wasnt sure...

And is Vista better than XP64 these days?

Since you've got a Mac Pro, it's a special case - there is the Apple driver disc for Vista64 on Mac Pro, and no such thing for XP64. You're not going to have any extra problems for it being Vista.

Autodesk does NOT invalidate your subscription for running Max on a Mac! If you call to ask questions they will tell you they can't help you but they don't invalidate subscriptions so long as you keep paying them.

Still, it run just fine on a Mac, this is pretty much the same as Autodesk saying they don't support Max on anything but Quadro or FireGL cards. They found a couple bugs they don't want to provide support for so they say "not supported."

Apple DOES support any Mac with a Bootcamp partition. What they don't support is Windows. Go to them with a Windows problem and they'll say "ask Microsoft". Go to them with a busted Mac that happens to have a Windows partition and they'll fix it. Bootcamp is an Apple product that is included with OSX. Installing Bootcamp does not invalidate your warranty.

Your IT guys are the kind of lazy/stupid ones who give IT guys a bad name. You can quote me on that, if you feel ballsy enough to go up to your IT guys and say "the guy on CGArchitect says you're a bunch of freaking idiots who are not qualified for your jobs and should be fired if you don't help me install Vista 64 on this Mac." If they call me during business hours here I will personally bitch them out for you. Then I will give them my cell number, tell them to call back in 10 minutes and walk down the street to the Apple store where I will get an Apple rep to bitch them out for thinking Apple is a bunch of hacks who don't let you run their own software on their hardware.

I've had issues with a server delay for almost 2 years now which 'we dont know how to solve'. The server will lock up for 6-7 seconds when browsing folders and files, every 5-6 seconds. Makes finding files such a chore

I actually don't know enough about Vista to answer that from personal experience, but it sounds like he's talking about the (known and resolved) typical-Microsoft-snafu NTLM thing. OSX uses Samba to handle SMB networking and Vista defaults to v2 of the NTLM security protocol, which is not supported in the version of Samba included in OSX 10.4. I did a quick search and found that the fix for this takes about 2 minutes of futzing with Vista settings:
