I paid for overnight shipping, so it's sitting in its box a few feet away. I am amazed at my discipline in finishing up my work calls before I tear into it. I'll let you know how it goes. Unfortunately, I won't be much help with installing Windows. I run it inside Parallels on OS X.

do you get much performance slowdowns or penalties using parallels? i've heard it can hurt you some what. i use a dual boot up on my mac for osx and xp64.
(also, do say when you install the ram and say what you think. i'm on 4 gig at present and cant afford Apple's prices for another 4 gig, but can certainly afford the alternative |

Hi Strat,
I really only use Windows to run AutoCad, and that works perfectly well for my needs. It would be interesting to try running Cinebench under Parallels, but I imagine there would be a substantial performance hit. I installed my two hard drives and additional 4 gigs of RAM (from OWC) in about 10 minutes, and everything seems to be running just fine. I did a couple of quick test renders in Vray, and they are easily 4 times faster on the Mac Pro than my G5 Quad Power Mac. I think this purchase is going to pay for itself in no time. Jack

I opened the Memory last night and was really impressed how well it was packed. It also came with instructions on how to properly install the memory. I would defiantly use Other World Computing again.

I have to say the industrial design of the Mac Pro is really exceptional. The enclosure looks the same as the G5, but adding RAM and hard drives is about as complicated as screwing in a light bulb.

thanks for the thread, we ordered more RAM on the strength of it. cost us a minor kick in the ass with import tax (which we only knew about when the delivery man demanded a cheque from us), but still so much cheaper than Apple's official stuff.
i now got 12 gig! |
