Default Mac Pro Memory

I'm finally making the plunge and buying a Mac Pro dual 2.8ghz Quad Core system with 2gb RAM. I'm also going to purchase 8GB of additional RAM but not through Apple because of the extreme price tag. Where would be a good place to buy this RAM, in terms of price and reliability. I looked at "Other World Computing" http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other.../64FB2MPK08GB/
what do you think or can you suggest another spot.

Also can I keep the 2GB of Ram that comes with the system and add the additional 8GB for a total of 10GB?

I've been using OWC for years and recommend them highly. They're a great combination of low prices and extremely reliable service. You can't really go wrong. Funny you mention making the plunge, because I may be doing the same within the next week or so. According to some tests I've done, an 8-core Mac Pro is roughly 6x faster at Vray rendering than my quad core G5. Oh, and when I do order I'll be buying all my RAM and hard drive upgrades from OWC.

Get what you pay for dude.

Had an apple mem module fail, they were there and replaced within 20mins.

Youll love the 8 core.

dont forget, unless your o.s. is a 64 bit version of XP or Vista you'll only be able to use 2-3 gig of ram if running windows applications.

Yeh but Ky I'm on a fixed budget. I could buy more than 32GB for the price they are charging of 8GB. I'm just a home user with a small business. I don't have the budgets that some of you guys have.

Yeh I can't wait to feel the power. I'm upgrading from a Dell PIV 2.6ghz with 512 MB of RAM. Think I'll notice the difference?

I'm glad to here this. Some great prices here I just wanted to here from someone that actually did business with these guys. There are a lot of scams out there and didn't want to fall into any traps.

I hope you have fun with your new mac. This will be my first mac. I never really used one before, just sat at one for a few minutes one day a store. I will also be installing Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit edition.

I found the answer to the 10GB question. Yes you can use the 2GB that comes with it and add an additional 8GB to give you 10GB.

http://chris.pirillo.com/2008/01/27/...b-or-32gb-ram/
"Buy the 8GB kit (4×2GB) and place these sticks in slot 1 & 2 on each of the Mac Pro’s riser cards, then add the original 2×1GB sticks to slot 3 & 4 on the TOP riser card, leaving slot 3 & 4 on the bottom riser card free. This will give you maximum quad channel memory performance and allow the Mac Pro to access all 10GB of memory."

I know what you mean—I'm still a bit cautious about ordering things online. That's why I like to spread the word when I find someone reliable. To be honest, I don't recall needing to send RAM back.

I'm still waiting for the right moment to upgrade myself. As soon as one of my clients signs the two proposals he says he wants to get started on, I think I'll be ready to order.

By the way, I just noticed that you can get 5% off purchases through the online Apple store if you use a Discover card.

If you call and talk to someone instead of ordering online and tell them that you are buying a computer for a business you can get between 5-8% off. I didn't realize this but I called just to ask some technical questions and she offered this to me. I hope when I order it tomorrow that this will still apply.
