No bogus ad agency speil this time.
A very pretty scene - a nice close-up of a bathroom sink. Some nice tile grouting in the backsplash, with some vases to offset and frame it. I've started my 8-week class in ArchViz over at www.cgworkshops.com, so I'm not sure how much spare time I'll have. But I do like this particular photo, so I hope to dive into it. If you are new or inexperienced or just not sure of your skills, post your render anyway! No one will judge you and the only thing that might come out of it is some positive comments designed to improve your skills. That's the whole point of these exercises. Man, look at the crappy render I posted yesterday for week #2! Looking forward to seeing some WIPs. |

I'll talk my way through as I progress with this week's photo.
First, I try to find some textures to match. I checked my collection and didn't have that exact pattern. I checked online and found something that is close, but no BMP map. So I made a BMP map in photoshop by copying the image, playing with the curves to stress the colours to go either white or black. It's not perfect, but it has a 3D look to it when I take it into the material slot. Then I tackled modeling the tap. I'm sure there are a few ways to do this (cylinder with bend modifier), but the shape cries out for a spline with some lofts, so that what I did. I made a number of circles (2mm difference in size) and then lofted them along varies percentages of the length of the path spline. I'll probably tweak it a bit more to get that fancy shape at the base, but it's fairly close now. Next I'll do a spline for the vase on the right and lathed it, but that'll be later tonight. |

I wasn't happy with the texture, not the crude attempt at making a BMP file, so I quickly rendered a pattern of 5 interlocking rectangles in 3DS. I bevelled them and then applied a unique stony texture to each one. I then grouped them and copied them, rotating them 90 degrees each time I copied them (to get some variety). I'll then spread them across the whole back splash wall.
My Arch Viz class doesn't actually start until Monday (which is my Tuesday) - the class forum simply opened today. So I have some spare time to fiddle with this. |

I tightened up some spacing between the individual tiles, grouped them, copied them sideways (checking spacing and alignment), then copied them up.
I put a chrome A&D material onto the tap. Hopefully I'll finish this up tomorrow. edit: hmm comparing it to the photo, the tiling is too big. sigh - that's what i get for mucking around at midnight. |

Had a free hour or so this afternoon, so I fixed the tiling size, adjusted the length of the PATH for the tap (it was too long), and added the sink and some more textures.
Comments and critiques welcomed. I still need to do the handles for the taps, the basket on the left, and the vase on the right. edit: lowered camera and adjusted Gamma (dammit) |

Thanks guys. I didn't want to sound like I was beating my own drum or having a conversation with myself - just exactly what Pau l said - trying to show what is going on in my mind when I was sorting this out.
Loïc - love to see you post some stuff. |
