Week #1 - Dupe-a-Photo vote
Poll has been set up. Just because the week is rushing to a close, I thought I'd suggest the two interior photos posted earlier. Time is short this week, so please vote when you can. New Photos will be selected and placed online to vote on early next week, giving us more time. Next week's photo theme will be a simple exterior. Image A has some basic furniture (a couch that can be box modeled, bookcase that can be box modeled, some bowls that can be lathed, etc), a shaggy rug (how often do you get to play with your grass plugin?) and then the lighting. The bookcase geometry lends itself to a play with lights and shadows. The trickiest part might be modeling the light, but if you have a lamp in your library then use it. Image B has another couch (maybe even easier since you don't see the front of it), table, magazine, and basically a box for the unit at the back. Not sure what the heck that thing is on the right, but it looks like it's 2 lathes - one for the base and one for the top..er.. thing. My vote is for Image A. And I don't think there should be any 'rules', as it's an exercise. The goal is to try to make your scene look as close as you can to the posted image. So, if you have pre-made furniture that's close, use it. But obviously, if you do this too often, you'll be taking less away from the exercise. So, police your own self. That's my take on it anyway. Looking forward to seeing how the voting goes, and it's Thursday for me, so we'll lock it in Friday and then start posting renders as your time allows. I'll probably do mine this weekend. |

B
Question- Are we in agreement on creative license? Does it have to really resemble but not be exact? Can we add but not subtract from the image? Are we trying to make it as close as possible? |

That will give a standard that everyone can compare their efforts to. But feel free to post a free-form render of the same scene. |

Well, I would say (in keeping with the spirit of the original concept) to try to make it as close as you can to the original posted image. However, I think it's a good idea also to have the option of posting a free-form render as well. So, if you think there should be flowers on the table, or perhaps a table cloth, or a painting on the rear wall, then make a free-form layer and add it in and post it as well. If we try to match the original image, then we'd all have a common base to shoot for. The idea is to hone your modeling, texturing and lighting skills. Real Life Scenario: An Interior Designer approaches you with a single photograph of a simple room. "The photographer did not get the shots that I wanted. Can you duplicate this photo, and then give me additional angles? Or maybe change the wall colour scheme? (the changes would be the free-form render)" |

So whats the timescale for this?
Shall we say voting closes Friday AM - 12pm GMT. (2nd May) Then Challange closes Thursday PM - 12am GMT (As in thursday midnight) (8th May) New Challange photo is posted next Thursday - 12pm GMT. (8th May) New Challange photo voting Closes next Friday - 12pm GMT. (9th May) Etc etc. The reason I'm keeping the voting deadlines very short is that I don't think there needs to be a huge amount of deliberation over which photo is chosen. If 5-10 people have voted on it then it should probably be enough. Maybe in future there doesn't even need to be a vote? Maybe someone should just take charge of choosing and posting an image? Hopefully by having the image chosen by Friday morning will allow everyone time to work on the image over the weekend. |

I just noticed that there is a poll at the top of the thread, FYI for the early voters that voted via post in this forum. Image A seems to be winning, but early trends indicated B was looking to be a favorite. This is your Dupe-A-Photo correspondant signing off.
