The technology is intriguing to say the least.

Now I just need to think of a way to use this in a presentation, or how to incorporate virtual models into it. Creating a series of renderings around the building, then loading them into Photosynth. Could be very intriguing indeed.

If you look at the photos as you move around, you'll see a 3D point cloud in the background that is being created from the photos. I don't think there is yet an SDK, but someone at SIGGRAPH told me a source at Microsoft said it would be possible to extract that data if look at one of the files, which would contain some usable information about the point cloud. I've not poked around, but there might be something there.

The point clouds are sweet. If you hold down control, and spin with the mouse, it hides the photos, and just shows the clouds. If that data could be extracted, that would be really powerful.

Remember that Orphan works legislation? I was reading a lot of Phillip K **** when that was brought up here and I just imagined that microsoft was behind the legislation to be able to open source all online photo albums to use for this application.

I am half joking of course, part of me thinks it possible the other part just thinks it would be a great story. Imagine being able to navigate a heavily populated area like times square in real time from tourists photos.

The first time I saw the beta for PhotoSynth, that's exactly what it did do.

This thing is so cool I can almost forgive them for Windows 98. (Now if only we could jump between different people's point clouds...)

You think the end goal for all this is to tie it in with Live Maps? If all point clouds had a relative location to one another and that became street view...

Aside, I can't imagine the storage capacity...
