Here's something i couldn't find in the posts. The picture proberbly failed to load so let's just explain that I've rendered a model for a good 8 hours but the effect is far from desirable. The reflection on a vase isnt smooth but fractured with every plane of the model. The model isn't highpoly, that I know, but isn't there a way to let maxwell figure things out?
The model comes from sketchup and in SU the angles can be made smooth. Maxwell beats SU in realism exept for this little part. |

wouldn't a rounded object like this need an extremely large number of polygons?
and one more Q, is there an easy way to increase the number of polygons in sketchup. If you know sh*t like that off course. thank you for the quick response. |

Well there are things you could do to a mesh like that to smooth it, however I don't believe sketchup has any of these tools so your only choice is to try to increase the number of faces.

i think I've found a smooth tool in maxwell.... just a render preview of a selection though so it might turn out for the worst. This forum is getting better and better

I disagree with the increase faces approach. Yes, you could do that. It would work. I don't think you need to.
I whipped up a vase in Max and rendereded in Maxwell (materials: max standard lt. gray for all except... maxwell wizard metal silver and maxwell emitter 100w halogen). Attached find images of 9 and 30 sided vase. They are not equal, but neither show the extent of the problem of yours. IMO, your vase needs smoothing turned on. I think that was a problem I had when I first worked in Maxwell's UI. I haven't done that in like a year, I'll go have a looksee can I find it... OK, it MIGHT be per attached "params" image. |

I agree smoothing is the first thing I would try, but like I said I don't know if Sketchup or Maxwell studio has this function so the only other option would be to increase the faces.

thank m. gruhn. The smoothing has no effect at all. I tried various angles, recalcutating and rendering a preview each time but no result. just a shitty fractured reflection.

mesh&display.JPG
fractured reflection.JPG what can anybody make of this. I imported the mesh from sketchup and rendered it in maxwell studio. Being new to rendering in total the flow of the wow factor is uplifting but if this isnt fixed I dont know how long it will last. |

You have the same problem with the glass that you did with the vase, not enough faces. I suppose it could possibly be an issue with the settings you’re using when you export the mesh from Sketchup, see if there is any way to smooth the mesh when exporting. Since I've only briefly used it I'm not familiar with all the options.
