Default autosave files for simultaneous sessions

Autosaves of multiple simultaneous Max sessions do override each other. While rendering in one session a second session overrides my autosave files.

Yes, that is correct, and has been "feature" (sarcasm intended) of 3dsmax for a long time. One of my colleagues was just ranting about max's inability to open multiple scenes in one session.

Since your 3dsmax preferences (3dsmax.ini) can only direct max to Autosave files to one location, each 3dsmax session writes files to the same location. Presumably it looks at the most recent file save time, and saves a new incremental file. This would make it appear that it is "saving over" your AutoSave file.

I supppose it might be possible to to circumvent this process by creating different 3dsmax configurations, and loading different 3dsmax.ini files that Autosave to different locations or filenames for each session....

Personally, I've never been motivated enough to try, even though the problem is a hassle, especially when dealing with xref's & linked files.

Just be aware that it will happen and ONLY use two simultaneous sessions when absolutely necessary.

first thought, rename one of the files

...just a thought but couldn't you dual install MAX to avoid this (assuming you directed the .ini files to different locations respectively ... and it doesn't start a slew of license issues)?

I would like a feature like this also. I often have 3 different Max files open. I might have the site, the building, and maybe another project all open at the same time. If I crash before I have saved updates I might or might not be out of luck. it is a crap shoot.
