Hi mycat,
In the material editor you need to make a 'multi-material' of 6 materials of which are already assigned unique material ID's. Then in the drawing editor, select your sphere, under the modifier collapse your sphere into a wireframe , then go into "face edit" mode in the object modifier panel, and select the specific faces you want to apply a UVW map to. Then apply your UVW unwrap or whatever modifier. Then in the UVW modifier panel you need to match the ID to the appropriate ID in the material editor. Then edit your points in the UVW unwrap editor. You can also rotate your UVW unwrap also through the UVW unwrap'gizmo'.. I think.. that's it! nichchris [ July 07, 2003, 02:49 PM: Message edited by: nichchris ] |

Thank nichchris.Very detail explaination.
Yes,I know that way to get different ID for model in normal way.Ok,let me make my question more clearily. Please see the screenshots: First picture show the boxmapping UVW. You will see one of UVW map correspoding to part of mesh from shpere. My question is how can I seperate six mesh of sphere wich exactly correspond with the six "Boxmapping" uvwmap. Need help further,Thanks. |

Hi mycat ,
I must admit you have me a little confused with your "boxmapping" UVW, I'm going on the basis that you are using UVWunwrap right and using it to make a boxmap? If so here goes.. Basically its pretty well the same as what I told you before but in this instance you want to use the same bitmap material right? or is it in the UVW editor that you want to show only one face of the siz sided sphere for your boxmapping? So before you create the multi-material you create a bitmap material, Then your multi-material, then use your mouse and left click and drag the bitmap material into one of the available slots in the multi-material, a popup will come up to copy or instance this material, you select "instance", then once you have created your multi-material continue as I have told you before. Hope this is right, If not you are not very clear on your question or you are missing something Or are you using something new in Max5 that I don't know about? mycat wrote: >>> You will see one of UVW map correspoding to part of mesh from shpere. My question is >>> how can I seperate six mesh of sphere wich exactly correspond with the six "Boxmapping" >>> uvwmap. This statemnt is really not clear to me. nichchris |

Thanks again
Okey.I will try my best to explain as clearly as possiable.I did this for game considration.I am seeking if it is workable to achieve that-First,Get the rendering pictures from six view of model(top,bottom,etc-like a box). The six pictures would be used for model's material.I need to select the specific faces which to be applied for box-mapping uvw map only. The problem is that how can I get the specific faces---As pic2.Ex.The red area of sphere I would like to apply MatID1.But how to select that red area at edit-mesh mode? Gosh, the question is really killing me.Hard to explain. :ngelaugh: [ July 08, 2003, 06:46 AM: Message edited by: mycat ] |

Hi mycat,
Well... It will be tomorrow. I think I have decyphered what it is you want, and if not I will have myself a nice little tutorial anyway. So tomorrow get ready for "utter hell". I hope you have the energy to chew this one back because it's not easy. To show you is one thing.. but to actually do it in a complex project is another story, I hope you reeeaaaally like using 3DSMAX! ps: I'm almost done all the pics for the tutorial. nichchris |

Just want to make sure (cuz I am not sure on the question) that you do not mean "select by id" button under "surface prop" in either edit mesh/poly.
