hi all.

i'm still stuck on max 3.1 .... but i'd appreciate any help i can get on this one.

max will get about 1/2 way done with a rendering (amount varies) and then then hangs/stalls. task manager says the process is only using 50% (on a dual-proc machine) at that point - it never goes above that. i can cancel the rendering, close the buffer, but max itself is stalled.
i thought it might be a mem problem - but just added another 1gb of ram (to get me to 2gb) and got the same results. the scene has under 500k faces, but my materials are rather complex procedural blends and multi-blends.

is there some known issue/limitation with large materials in max? has anyone else had this problem? do you know what it's related to?

Hi ghraben,

We had a similar problem several times. I don't know much about the problem itself, but I know it got to do with the *OS.

We had large files that were impossible to render in XP, nor W2000, nor W98... The only OS that did not suffer any of these problems was NT, which we still use on most machines overhere.

I recommend NT for max3.1 because it's very robust. Don't forget that max3 was originally designed for NT (only).

listen to nisus.... he's right. (but we never had such problems because we were allready working on NT with MAX3.1 hihi) Also: WIN98 doesn't allow one to run multiple copies of max at the same time...

thanks for the tip on the OS. i'm in NT now, and the rendering is going off without a hitch. i guess it's back to nt full-time....<rrrg>

but where does this leave max 4 and 5? i thought they will only run under 2k/xp?

to be honest, I only trust NT... I've rendered files more than twice the size capable of rendering on xp, w2k or w98 without any problem...

The reason we use other OS? My collegues... they don't believe me even after NT saved their asses several times...

to be honest, I like w2k the most, even when i'm also very keen on NT, i've worked with W2K for almost 2 years now, and didn't have any crash using MAX3.1/4.26....

Hey nisus, I also grew up with NT... it rocks!! it has that nostalgic feeling for me.. the good ald days

I gotta say I'm w/quizzy on this one... When I started, NT was THE ONLY way to go. Win2K has just taken NT's awesome track record (my NT4 system crashed three times in three years - PERIOD) and made it friendlier. I just feel "safe " behind an NT machine...
