Exclamation

The response to the lastest poll regarding monthly challenges has been overwealmingly in support of having one, so this is how the first challenge will work.

Challenge #1 (Design and Modeling)

May 13, 2002 - June 13, 2002

This challenge requires you to model a bridge that will span a body of water. The structure should be inspired by the works of architect Santiago Calatrava. These images are a small sample of Calavatra's work that will point you in the right direction.

CABALLEROS footbridge

CASCINE footbridge

BACH DE RODA FELIPE II Bridge

You can also take a look at the rest of his bridges HERE

The overall look of the the bridge should be organic and fluid, much like Calatrava's bridges.

The main purpose of this challenge is to build a foundation and model for future challenges and to give everyone the chance to model something that most have never had the oppourtunity to attempt. If you are not comfortable trying to design a new structure, feel free to model one of Calatrava's existing works. Judging will be based on two categories: 1. How well the model was created, how clean it is, and the complexity. 2. Originality, look and feel and design. Obviously if you model an existing work, you will not qualify for the second category.

Do not concern yourself with the environment just yet, although you can rough it in if you feel it will help. Right now the only thing you will need to post, in order to qualify to win, is a rendered/shaded view of your model and a wire frame view. Of course presentation helps, so be original. One thing that you will want to keep in mind is that this model will be used for future modelling, texturing, lighting, animation and composition challenges, so make sure you model accordingly.

Judging will be done by site visitors based upon the above criteria via online polls. Winners will be announced 1 week from the close date of the challenge. (June 20)

The contest begins on May 13, 2002 and ends June 13, 2002 at Midnight MST (GMT -7)

Final image posts should be posted to the "Final Work" Forum under the heading "Challenge #1 The Calatrava Bridge". Any questions about the challenge can be posted here. And of course do not forget to post your WIP to the "WIP" forum. After all, the challenges are all about learning and improving your work.

Lastly have fun and good luck!

Hi all,

Calatrava's bridges are great indeed, his other work too. But I also admire the photographers who fits these on picture. They are real artists too.
As I have seen some of his work on site, I have to admit that I was more moved by the pictures than by the architecture itself. But I guess that's because these pictures are so well known and well-lit that the reality is just not good enough anymore.
Looking forward to see the enterings of you all

Hi Miguel,

How ever long you see fit. Other than having to be organic and fluid looking, meant to span a body of water and inspired from a Calatrava bridge, everything else it completely up to you.
However if you are thinking of spanning 20 miles, you might want to think a bit smaller as you won't be able to any of the detail without a close up shot.

Hope that helps,

Jeff.. thanks...

This is going to be fun. Calatrava was the first case study projects I did when I first learned AutoCAD 10 with 3dfaces modeling to create holes in the wings of the floating water pavilion.
