okay here it is...

i was not trying to match the real movie set btw just make something good looking.

naturally this res and quality does not do the full size justice but now you know how i did it which was the point of this thread!

Hi Guys,

I couldn't resist taking a 'stab' at his one. Here's my first pass.

Package: Max 6 / Mental Ray
Time spent modifying : 1 hr
Render time : 6 hrs.

This lighting setup is more Arch Viz style focusing on even saturation and soft shadows. I assume we're trying to emulate the lighting in the actual movie, so I'll tweak from here. I'll be adding the furniture/clutter and finishing off the materials as well. I left out the lighting under the glass floor and under the water on this pass but it will be in the final with proper caustics.

Thanks for the awesome unchallenge!

Mike

I'm not sure why, but for some reason I came back to this and really wanted to "finish" it off. I took some liberties by altering the model some, mainly by adding the bar. I also threw a few additional light sources in besides the ceiling fixtures which quite a few of us had already done.

I really put a lot of effort in to making this not photo-real. By over embelishing the colors and light contrast I was hoping to achieve a certain style.

I'd love to hear what you guys think, since this is a stylistic departure from what I'm used to doing, but I'm thinking of pushing things more this direction on actual projects.

BTW, the high res version (1800x2400) done in final render took about 14 hrs to render.

Hi res version here: http://home.comcast.net/~cassils/Kill_Bill_11-23-04.jpg

Great job! I think it looks fantastic and although you say its not, I think it is professionally photorealistic. The thing that could be most improved though, is probably the wood floor. I noticed the tiling almost right away.

Good eye Tim. I'm guessing that your talking about the wood floor down on the first floor and not the darker floor up on the balconies? I'm not sure how I missed that but your right. I'll probably send a new render tonight to fix it.

Man that's nice.

Mind sharing how you got those lights to glow like that? Perfect effect.

It was nothing too fancy really, but it did take a lot of trial and error. I just used standard lights that were pretty bright (multipliers vary from 3-10) with very short far attenuation. Then I used a dull yellow self illuminating material on the lamp shades, and adjusted the self illumination amount up and down untill the center of the shades were "blasted out" but the edges maintained a little bit of yellow. The only photoshop effect I used was a very subtle blurred soft light layer which I suppose does add to the effect a little.

OK, so it's been like 4 years since the last post, but I only just found this thread and did some playing around with the file. If anyone still reads this let me know what you think!
