So is the top prize (top three, really) a product of the last challenge score or the cumulative overall score? In other words, could someone get top prize even if they don't get top score of the last challenge?

yes I'm not sure statistically how the breakdown would have to happen, but If you were to place first in all the challenges but the last one, where say you were 10th, you could still walk away with the top place in theory. All depends if your final cumulative score is the highest. It's being scored the way becuase the top prize winner(s) should be the best "all around" competitors.
