Default executive suite animation

i posted an earlier version of this in the WIP section several months ago. after several revisions, i finished it about a week ago. i think the results are my best to date, so i thought i would share the final with everyone on the board.

the animation was used as a design tool, and as a donor tool. we went through about 5 full length rendered revisions before the final. the client asked several times for the animation to move at a slower pace. originally i estimated my time to complete at 120 hours. technically i hit that number on the initial animation. i had extra hours for the revisions.

the model was built with FormZ, animated with Max, rendered with Vray, and composite with AfterEffects. all models are custom built, all textures are custom made. the irradiance maps took about 30 hours to calculate, and the rendering time averaged 12 minutes a frame on p4 2.4 Ghz machines with 1 gig of ram.

i am still waiting on approval of whether or not we get to use the music, or if there is going to be a voice over, ...or maybe nothing at all. who knows.

http://www.phase22.com/work/karlsberger/piedmont/index.html .....file size is 23.8 megs, and will begin playing when it has downloaded to the point that it will play smoothly.

be mean, be critical. i appreciate it.

oh, and the space is an executive suite in a hospital. a place most of us viz people will never get to see.

.

Good work! There are a lot of things I like about it like the smooth controled camera movements, the lighting and materials all look great and I especially like the groooovy music!

I'm sure it's too late to make any changes but it does seem just a little dark, but hey, that could just be my monitor or something. Also, it might have been fun to see a couple of paths that aren't first person.

You will undoubtedly get some people saying that the paths are too long, too slow, or too predictable or something like that but that all comes down to personal opinion. In my opinion, it's appropriate for the intended audience with the possible exception of mixing in some non first person shots.

I really like it. One of the least distracting animations I have seen. There does seem to be an issue with "stretching perspectives" that caught my eye but I think it is really good.

I think it is great, but...I think I would use a cross fade between the individual scenes instead of a fade to black.

Great work

30 hours for GI on one machine is pretty fast for light solution of this quality.
I hardly wait Vray 1.5 with DR so my three dual monsters can work together.
Maybe I will get simillar project with animation for residental house soon. I presume you have modeled furniture, or you found it on internet but it takes same time for both. The prices in my country are low for this kind of work.
What would be reasonable price for simillar project including GI and modeling of furniture.
You dont have to say your price for this project but average price for, lets say 3 min. of animation at this quality.
Thanks.

Really nice! The lighting is smoooth! My only crit would be that it seems almost monochromatic (not your fault, of course), but maybe a few more floral arrangements (although I am sure it would have increased the poly count and time by a decent margin).

Good job!

Does the 120 hours include the rendering? I agree 30 hours on one machine seems pretty fast. I am an Final Render user, but I'd like to hear about the details. What was the average frame time?

Nice work...and 12min/frame is a good time.

What were your settings for calculating the Irr.Map ??

It might be the codec that is making it dark. Sometimes when I use the Windows Media Codec, everything turns out quite a bit darker than what it originally was. ....but only on my computer.

Do you have Windows Media Encoder instaslled? This problem starts for me when I load the encoding app from Microsoft onto my computer.

Here is a still frame of how dark it should be... does it look the same as the animation to you? Just curious. You can be my test audience.

For the type of space the animtion is of, and the target audience, I think the slow long paths work. If the space was more progressive, hen the long slow paths might look out of place. The music is probably a little to funky for the target audience though.

Thanks.
I typically bill projects like this according to the numbers of 'space' to build. I broke this animation down into 3 spaces. The patient room, the guest room, and the corridor. I have a rough number I use to bill according to how complicated a space is. Then I add an extra 15-20% to cover animating, setup, compositing, managment, ect... A typical space could be anywhere from $2k to $5k depending on the detail, complexity, ect... Interior spaces are usually a lot more coplicated than exterior spaces. Both in the detail needed for the modeling, and the lighting.

So there is my broad description, without actually telling how much this animation cost.

No, 120 hours included my modelling, lighting, animating, composting, and project managment time. Because I work at a firm, I have several computers to use for a render farm. I processed the irradiance files, and rendered the entire animation over the course of a weekend.

I split the irradiance files over 2 machines, they are Dual Xeon 2 Ghz with a Gig of ram. One a irradiance map finishes, I submit it to the render farm, and start my machine on the next map.

The rendering time per frame averaged 12 minutes on p4 2.4 Ghz machines with 1 gig of ram.
