Default importing a cad dwg to 3d max 4

hi there, i'm trying to import a cad dwg file into max 4 layers checked and no error message appears,however nothing shows in my viewports and nothing appears in the select list.
any ideas- do i have to import to illustrator then out to max?
(haven't tried yet cause i only have photoshop).

What version of CAD are you using? I was having a similar problem with ADT 2004 and VIZ 4

James,
You should read this Thread. I had the same problem with exporting PLines into Viz4 from ADT 2004. I eneded up reinstalling Autocad 2000, until I get the upgrade to Viz 2005.

hi, try saving the file to 2000 format before importing it to 3dsmax

*i second the motion, try using Autocad 200, Architectural Desktop 2i..
*it doesnt really work for Autocad 2004...classic is better
