Default Architectural Desktop Performance Issues

I have just purchased a high end laptop and I have noticed that it is exceptionally fast with every task, except for when it comes to Exiting the Orbit Command in Desktop 2005, as well as when I go from 2D Wireframe to shaded.

I am wondering why this is still as slow as my previous crappy p3 computer? Is this the way the program runs on every computer? even the professionals that have dual systems, 2 gigs and amazing video cards?

The following are the specs for my new laptop, I am wondering if anyone can confirm for me that it is the right machine to using for a career in Architectural Visualizations as I will be replacing my desktop with it. Do any of you have these same problems??

HP Pavillion ZD7380US Notebook
Pentium 4, 3.2Ghz (hyper threading), 512 Cache L2,
80GB Hard Drive at 5400RPM
1024 (1Gig) DDR SD RAM (expandable to 2 Gigs)
128MB NVIDIA GeForce Fx Go 5700 Video card
800mhz system bus

I still have the option of exchanging or returning it, I am wondering what your suggestions are? Do I need a more powerful machine to run Desktop, Viz & Max? or is Desktop just a crappy program?!

Thanks for your help!

Not sure about ADT, but AutoCAD 2005 (as well as 2000i) are and were horribly slow to switch between shaded and 2D wireframe modes. I'm on a dual Xeon, Quadro FX and 2Gb RAM.

Just speculation, but in my opinion, Autodesk has been going the way of MicroSoft by using the "one software for everybody" model, and performance has taken a backseat to profit. My 2 cents... am I way off base here?

Hi

Complex models can be slow, even with very fast systems. As you gain more computer power, you push your horizons out. Also, remember, in a CAD system, the precision in the database will slow things down compared with a less precise database such as what is Viz 2005 and Max. Try writing the model into Viz Render and check the orbit time. Put the same model into Viz 2005 or Max and the orbits will be faster.

Cheers

Kerry

I have the same configuration on a dell notebook and here's the catch

ADT runs fine on most 2d work, an basic 3d, as more complex the model, the program runs very slow, i noted that, altough 128 MB Video Card is pretty fast for both autoCAD and 3d studio VIZ, doesn't have enough power for extensive 3d operations, such as full shaded complex models, and full polygon display, and real time display (both on 3d viz), this is because notebooks are not workstations, 3d videocards that comes with notebooks are slower than the desktop ones, and most of these video cards, are designed more for gaming, and dvd play back, and for eventual use of 3d appz, getting a workstation videocard will solve the problem, on the other hand i also own a dell mobile workstation with centrino, and a quadro FX 400 video card, and the procesor is slower than the pentium 4, doesn´t have Hyperthreading, ADT runs much better here because of the card, so here's my advice, dont' use a notebook as a replacement of your desktop, there are some cool 3d basic workstation such as dell's 370 that you can get with a good videocard with drivers designed especially for ADT and 3d studio, dual monitors and 2 gb of RAM for under 3500 USD, not to mention that you can allway assamble a clone with the same specs for under 2800 USD, last but not least, use your laptop for presentations, and basic 3d, leave the heavy work for the workstation.
