Default Lightscape to Lightwave v8 tutorial

Hi everyone,

Over the past few months I have been developing a pipeline to port Lightscape solutions to Lightwave without the problems that present themself with the LS Import plugins.
I am in the process of writing up a comprehensive tutorial about this and it will soon be finished. Parts of the tutorial are already online for you to take a look at, but the most important parts will come at the end of this day or tomorrow. The tutorial will continue to be refined over the next couple of weeks.

In the meantime I have an appetizer image for you, which is the end result of the tutorial if you do it right, and if you spend a few minutes playing with it. The best part of it is, of course, that it renders in about 35 seconds at 800x600 at Low AA on a P4 2.2Ghz. the grain was actually added later with a post plugin Virtual Darkroom to give it a photographic look.

The location of the tutorial is this:
http://www.except.nl/Overig/lightscapelightwave.htm

The location of the official forum thread is posted on the Newtek forum,
if the admin would permit me to post this, its here:
http://vbulletin.newtek.com/showthre...ewpost&t=30533

Ill hope to see you browsing the tutorial soon, and I hope it will make a lot of you very happy.

I'm confused.

You are writing a tutorial, but what you posted isn't it?

Anyway, thank you for squeezing a little more life out of LS.

I do not use Lightwave. But I have had AccuTrans3D for many years, I will upgrade the version. I wonder if it will be able to convert to some other useful format for bringing the LS solution into OTHER software, like Cinema4D.

What is the secret here? Is AccuTrans converting the LS vertex map to a UV map? That could be useful.

Wayne Hogue, the creator of Accutrans 3d, was so kind to adapt his program to allow the reading of the radiosity solution through the method explained in my tutorial. He did this on request by me. He is a great and very helpfull person. If you are in dire need perhaps he will be able to assist you as well.

The solution from the LS file is mapped to vertex color maps through the VRML 1 interface. Once in it the solution can be saved from Accutrans 3D in all object formats that it is able to write vertex maps / colors to.

As far as I can quickly check this would be:
Lightwave
X3d
VRML 2

Even for other programs my tutorial would probably be a handy reference as I address many problems that will occur in any package. You can then mould my lightwave based solution to your specific package.
If the Maya object format supports vertex color maps then perhaps someone can convince Wayne to start supporting the writing of vertex colors to it, as the maya object format is already in it. Same goes for the Softimage XSI format.

He already has. A number of years ago I discovered that AccuTrans would only read v3.1 .lp files, and NOT v3.2 I emailed him the SDK that was on the LS 3.2 install disks and he had it fixed that day.

Yeah, great guy, great program!

Just checked your site. You make some godawful good arch vis renders. Not too shabby on the detail... I love your unique style, with the photograin...

Can I ask what you use? I seem to detect Lightscape in some of them, but there is certainly some post going on
