Ok, so I finally came up with an idea - something like this...It's supposed to be a circular building with a walkway & arches surrounding it, but hopefully that was pretty self explanatory. I haven't decided on the final camera angle, but so far this is my favorite.
I'm only using 2 of the shapes here so I'm going to have to do some creative modeling with the others. The good part is, I can use lots of really small versions of these shapes to make larger representations of objects - much like Lego blocks. So I plan on filling the scene with various objects like people shapes, planters with basic plants, maybe some benches etc. I hope that's not cheating, and if it is I will probably make an effort to do a new scene. If any of the judges don't think this is allowable, please let me know as soon as possible. |

Hi Tim, nice start. I love the idea, this remind me a kind of mediterranean architecture. (because of the pure white walls probably, and the pure blue little piece of sky).
I don't think combining shapes to make some details or filling the scene is cheating, this is what we have to do. If it is cheating, so i can throw my first wip to the bin btw, i'm curious to see how you'll make peoples, or plants with theses shapes, it seems very hard to me to make organic shapes with them. Good luck to you, Tim. Last edited by Newke; March 11th, 2005 at 01:41 AM. |

good idea tim
maybe you could fill the walls wit small ceiling made with the primitives as the ennie's brown house by frank lloyd wright http://www.ennisbrownhouse.org/histo...nt_loggia.html it could give you more detail using the primitives provided |

This is another image that has a great simplicity and elegance to it. I'm worried about it getting too busy with the addition of all of the other shapes and forms. If you can keep the detail restrained while still utilizing all of the objects, you'll have a winner, especially if you can come up with a lighting scheme that challenges the norm.
BTW, I just got back from a trip to Arizona, including Phoenix. Talk about a nice change from Toronto at the beginning of March! |

Thanks Nicholas. Phoenix is great for about 6 months out of the year. The other six is when I wish I was in Canada.
This is where I'm at now. I think I'm going to expand the composition a little more vertically, more like the 1st image. I've decided to add a large opening to this building, so it will raise some curiosity to the viewer and a little interst on the left side of the image. I made some benches, using a few more of the shapes. The cylinder you see is just a dummy that represents a 6' person. I'm still going to add planters but haven't decided where & what shape yet. Also since I'm using the circle shapes for the building, you can really see the faceting now which looks horrible. I've got a figure out a way to smooth that out. Is it allowable to add more faces to the shapes, or even possible to re-create the same shapes using my own methods - solids or surfaces? They would still be the same shape & proportion, but have more faces. Jeff? |

Ok, here's where I'm at. I've pretty much decided on this as the final view. I've looked at so many options for this because I think this is one of if not THE most important part.
I'm using a few more shapes now. Made some "desert" plants out of the tall pyramid shape. I'm really trying hard for each shape to have a definite purpose and fit in without just throwing in the shapes because its part of the rules. I don't want the scene to get too busy, since I think the best part is just how the arches curve around and create something nice to look at. I'm starting to think about materials too. I want to do some kind of metal on the top part of the building. The tiles will probably be a darker granite material with high reflections on it. I need to make the joints a lot tighter though if its going to be granite. I don't know what material I will do for the arches yet. Maybe just keep them light like they are now, and add a stucco texture or something. |

Some randomness to those desert plants would help; different sizes, slight orientation changes, etc. Blur has a Random Transform tool in their Blurscripts package (used to be on their site, but I can't locate it anymore. Anyone know?) that would really do the trick for you.
