Hi,
Great start by everyone. I hope I can keep up! This challenge looked very unassuming to me at first; it seemed to be straight forward and I had some pre-conceived ideas about how I may address it. It has proven to be more difficult, though, and I've found myself thinking about the implications of simple forms to a greater extent than I had imagined. What has challenged me the most is the notion that this is an exercise in designing a structure, something that is habitable, buildable and situated. Of course, the challenge isn't necessarily that at all, but my first reaction was to proceed in this direction. I quickly realized that I was designing in a contextual void. To some, this may seem ideal, but to me it creates more questions than answers. Besides, I'm not a designer, and I have chosen this career specifically because I recognize my lack of abilities as a pure designer. Ultimately, I decided to pursue this challenge in a different way by looking at the objects as pieces of an "assembly". This assembly is purposely ambiguous; that is, it is not defined as a "building" or "structure" but as either a portion or combination of those. The manner in which the assembly is built is a bit haphazard at this point, but will evolve with more time spent with the objects. My hope is that the final image can oscillate in scale and purpose: from depictions of screens and wall systems to urban environments and masterplans, however far-fetched. For me, the purpose of this exercise is not to render a building - I do that every day - but to explore relationships that aren't part of my everyday work. I have yet to incorporate all of the objects, but will do so for the next WIP. Anyway, sorry for the long-winded explanation. Man, I feel like I'm back in school again! Will we be given grades? BTW, I had to severly compress the image to make it under the 200K limit at an image size of 1000 pixels. Any chance of increasing the upload limit for challenges? |

reminds me of foundation bars on the foundation bed!!! This is actually going somewhere. Rendering buildings and something habitable is always arch visualization but his could open new doors, new opportunities we cg artists could explore on....I will be looking forward to see this WIP develop.

Here's an update, with a bit of an idea about materiality and lighting. I like the thought that this could be turning into some kind of urban environment: tent city, abandoned mine camp, future planet settlement... Almost all of the shapes are in use at this point, and I'm really trying to use them in their recognizable forms. I've done some editing of the "assembly" in order to bring some life to it, almost like the start of communities, each huddled around a glowing cube form.

i really like this approach, somehow i even prefer the first image which is "colder" and not so realistic. it could be some kind of monument like gibellina (http://www.archidose.org/Apr00/041700.html) or eisenman in berlin. well i'm sure this will be a very nice submission !

Thanks for the comments, Steffen. You're link to the Gibellina project was right on and is very inspirational. As for the materials: I'm going to take a more carful look at them later today, but I tend to think that somewhere between the first image and this one is where it will end up.

Hi Nicholas, I like the abstract nature of your composition. Perhaps you may explore the possibility of adding another layer of order for your random cubes to make your concept clearer. Maybe by color, orientation, proximity etc.
