For all of you who are familiar with LA or live in LA, could you post any sugestions you have for a location for this year's event?
Ideally I need some place that is within 10-15 min cab ride of the convention center. I would have liked to keep it at the Palms, be we need a space that will be able to accomodate 150-200 people. Anywhere that has unique architecture etc would be a bonus. Thanks for any and all suggestions.

Well, about 20 mins. away is the A+D Museum, 8560 W. Sunset Blvd
Bing theater is about 15 mins. away. Check out the following website. You can search for venues online. Might be a starting point. http://www.gatheringguide.com/event_...nt_venues.html |

Jeff-
I'm sorry I can't recommend any locales, but I'm curious to know how many cg arch folks are going to be there? I'd like to go, but only if there will be a group there. Thanks for your help. Take care. -travis

Travis, there will be alot of people there. Last year we had about 130, and we expect this year to be around 150-200. Tentatively we are looking at booking the fifth Floor of the Los Angeles Music Center.
http://www.patinagroup.com/catering/LAMC/ Click on event spaces at the bottom left and then "Fifth Floor" We are just securing our last sponsors for the event before we book as the space will cost $20K to reserve and I don't want to get stuck with the bill. If all goes as planned we will also have a live band too, but no promises yet. everything hinges on $$$ This year we will also be selling VIP seats for the event which will entitle you to wine and hors doeuvres at a round table up front and center during the awards presentations. After that there will be free booze and food for everyone for the rest of the night. $50 of the VIP tickets will also be matched by CGA to put towards next year's scholarship fund.

I'm looking at Tuesday night (August 2nd) This could change, but Tuesday night has been a good night for the past few years.
NOTE: The event date has been changed to Wednesday August 3rd, 2005

So what would one expect from a visit to SIGG? Do you need many days to see the exhibits? Or is one day enough? There are many conferences and panels, but it looks like the most important is the general show. But five or six days of it?
Obviously I'm trying to decide whether to go. So I would like to know from previous 'goers' what makes sense. I've never been to LA, though I'm a Californian. The other issue for me this year is I will be in northern and central CA for the first 3 weeks of July, so it'll be weird to fly back to the East Coast, just to go back a week later. Don't know what to do... |

Ernest,
though I've never been for architectural viz purposes, I've been to 4 previous SIGGs. They've declined in attraction each year, but I was also a frustrated pup wandering about, wondering who might hire me. I found little pleasure in much other than the Animation Theater. I must say, though, that it's absolutely necessary to see the floor and all of the exhibitors, if only for four hours. I'll do it each year I go just to see what techno gadgets are up-and-comers and what studioos are working on. Now that I know there will be an arch viz crew, I'll be much more motivated to attend this year. Can you justify the trip - that depends on what you want out of it. Coming from NY is a trek that needs greater purpose than desireing some pretty images (which you would definitely see). For networking purposes - that could be the rub. That's why I'd be motivated. I'd really like to see some other folks who do what I do. I think I'll also be owing a couple of folks some beers by the time I'm done asking all of my forum help-questions. Hope that helps a smidge. Take care. -travis
