Is there an issue with 2005 to viz 4? It might be a saving issue. Try to save as a 2000 format and then link.

Viz 4 can't open 2004 dwg format you have to save as your drawing file into dwg 2000 format.

VIZ 4 and MAX 5 shipped before AutoCAD 2004 did. Just like AutoCAD 2002 cannot open an AutoCAD 2004 file, VIZ 4 cannot either.
The file needs to be saved as 2000 in order for VIZ 4 to open it, or you can use newer versions of MAX or VIZ.
