This is a wonderful image. I like the contextual information and point of view. The office buildings could of used better lighting and balanced out the image overall. It is moving towards the "muddy" side. Sky and moving objects are convincing.

The image as a strip does not work so well in this composition. The use of three point perspective also detracts form the subject matter. It was very hard for me to see what the subject matter is even though that is obvious. That is because you have elements there that do not belong like the helicopter and too many cars.
The matted edge on the right side also makes the image sufer along with the uneven blurr on the image on that side is very distracting on the overall image. The lighting on the building suggest an overcast sky but the background clouds suggests a clear sky if not partly cloudy skies. Ths unevenness in the clud cover as well as in the 'presence' of light gives the viewer conflicting information about the image hence the composition suffers. The buildings' thermal pane glass do not seem to reflect any of the environment and they feel sterile. You can either remedy that in photoshop or generate reflection maps from your 3D scene. Even just a hint of this would improve your image a lot. The image works however as a magazine illustration or a poster or even a billboard illustration but fails as a pure arch-vis image. images are generated for specific purpose and this one fails to either show the important parts of the subject as well as to show the subject matter well. Architecturally the camera angle chosen does not work.

I feel like we're pretty removed from the interesting stuff and detail on the left portion of the image. Instead, half of the image is an empty glass building flanked by oddly blurred houses. The other half contains all the dynamic pieces - the traffic, the helicopter, people, foliage, etc.
You could crop that stuff out and the image improves quite a bit. If you're going to bring us this close to the building, you'll need the interior details, lighting, and materiality to back it up. Err on the side of the 2pt. perspective. |

There are so many unrelated things going on here. Is it the disconnected nature of a city, or does the picture lack focus? I think it lacks focus. Its like seeing a city park where the benches are full of people, but you notice no-one is talking to anyone else, they are all eating lunch, reading, talking on cellphones.
Color is mostly on the moving things, the buildings are very gray and empty. No-one is home. However, they are all in the same tonal range which keeps them feeling unified. The other elements are more in their own worlds--the upper road is light while the lower is dark (I know, concrete vs asphalt, it's too wide a difference here) the cars are bright while the trees are dull. The sleeker modern portion of the city is divided from the older part rather harshly, the strong blur futher removes the old. You cannot get there, the circulation is only front-back, not side to side. On the left the billboard blocks a view to the background, which would be better if it were open, to break up the too-strong axial feeling. The imagery is nice, but could be pushed left to allow some view. The sky tone works well with the low-key architecture. A typical sky would have ruined the rendering. |
