Most of the online 3d competitions that I have either entered or have observed required WIP submission which show how one reached their final result.
I use 3DAllusions.com and CGTALK.com as examples of successful competitions that have used this method and it is clear just what work went into the images. How is it possible to determine just what was done when all that is submitted is one WIP and final image? I intend to submit many WIPS and if there are others, I will offer critique. This is the first I have seen where this is not the norm. I would like to ask that the WIP section have more weight as anyone can use a past work to satisfy one of the entries during the challenge if all they post is one WIP and a final image. you know I was thinking the same thing in the last three days but I didn't want to start this discussion and disturb anyone, everytime I write something negative some people get bothered.
But truth is I wanted to see at least 6-8 WIP submissions instead of one or two. and most players submitted WIP 2 days before the final.... Having many WIP is another way to make sure that the person is indeed doing the work and helps people understand why he does what he does. this link http://cgnetworks.com/challenge/gran...hallenger=4304 shows work in progress and that procedure is what I like. This artist is good in the domain of renderings and concepts for artistic illustrations... |

I agree. Even though im not a competitor, i like to look through the wips and see how people work. I think in the future it might be good to do what cgtalk does and have different milestones like concept, modeling, texturing, lighting, etc...Look at Dan Beinart's wip for example...his wip is almost exactly the same as the final.wip final
To me it seems like the wip submissions are a chore, like people only post one because they have to. The purpose of having wip forum is show others how you work, and to recieve feedback from others on your work. Theres not much feedback to be given when you post an image 1 day before the deadline and its almost final anyway. |

other people's comments improve your work and they might show you something you missed and you will end up with a better product. but Architects some of them are jealous and overprotective of their work and ideas....maybe that's why... I'm not afraid of people copying my ideas I know my value...

Tyrone, I'll be emailing all of the competitors several times throughout this and all future competitions to ensure that WIPs are posted more regularily. I too am disapointed by the lack of volume of the WIPs thus far as well.
Obviously I do not want to have to eliminate people based on a lack of WIP, but I should remind everyone that WIPs are part of the rules.

As my name was evoked .. the reason I only posted 1 WIP was that Challenge 2 coincided with the 4 busiest weeks I have had as a visualiser forcing me to start challenge 2 on the final morning.
I agree it's much better if you can show the development of an image and if you look at challenge 1, that is what I did. However, on a longterm set of challenges like this, a certain amount of flexibility is crucial if you are to balance the demands of competing with the inevitable commercial pressures the competitors will also be under. |

i really have to underline this !!! itīs a great pleasure to be in the contest and i think we all do our best. but a few things are very hard to combine.
1. most of us have to work and to be honest this has priority one for me. 2. i am forced to travel a lot. at the moment i am in montreal for a time. so when i am able to go back to the challenge, half of the time is gone. 3. five rounds are a lot (in my opinion too many rounds with much time in total) so itīs a part of your every day life for a long time. and i really have to decide from week to week if i can "afford" this challenge any longer. the high number of people who "gave" up prove this. now, itīs okay to say that we all knew the rules before and if we canīt deal with it we should quite. and maybe this is right.....but sentenses like "I wanted to see at least 6-8 WIP submissions instead of one or two" are really a bit .....irritating to me...to say it in a nice form. i just can say that i am convinced that all (!!) competitors are doing their best and when someone do not delivere 6-8 wips that it is for a good reason.
