Exclamation Animation CODECs and Compression - IMPORTANT

Hi everyone,

As you know the compression types indicated in the rules is MOV, however I will also accept and prefer DivX.

I have been adding the numbers up and uncompressed MOV will likely be about 1GB. 15 competitors x 1GB x 15 downloads by 6 judges = A lot of bandwith! I have emailed my host asking for a fast pipe and some space to host all this for a few days so I will be posting more about this shortly.

Anything you can do to reduce your file size, while still maintaining quality is greatly appreciated!

If you have any questions or concerns, please post them here. Let me know also how big your file sizes are looking if you can.

Agreed.

Was wondering about the MOV format and how long it was going to take to upload. I had 2 seconds uncompressed giving me a file size of 100mb - larger than the sum total of individual frames. Poor image quality too under compression.

Fine for those with flash line speeds but for the few of us still using two tin cans and a piece of string.....

OK. My host assured me that our server has a direct unthrottled connection to a 35mps pipe and that we should be able to handle the load. Unfourtunately, there will be no public vote for this challenge as we just can't afford to have 200-300 people downloading that much video. I will post smaller res version of the top 3 if I can.

I will be setting up an FTP site for the competitors to upload their animations to and emailing everyone with the FTP information. As it WILL take some time to upload the animations, please be sure you do not leave it until the last minute. Allow at least several hours to upload.

I will be disabling uploading of MOV to the forums as the forum software will not be able to handle the script execution times that would be required to upload the large file sizes.

If you don't have a good connection perhaps you can make arrangements to use a client's line, or a friend nearby with a faster link? Take a CD over, upload from there?

Not necessarily everyone. I hope if some cannot that a host can be found for them.

Jeff--any ideas on how much bandwidth (monthlong hosting) would be needed for EACH anim? It would help to have a number to see how feasable hosting would be.

...or can we have, say, a 4mb limit on individual WIP threads so that we can post more compressed versions of animations that would in turn be accessible to others. If we want to post a revised animation we take down the previous one. Then we can post the finished animation to a locked Final thread but provide a small version in the WIP thread that people can actually view.

It's only 20 seconds after all.

How would that fit into the scheme of things?
