The architect practice I work for has just been asked to produce a 3d Max visualization camera matched into the existing photo. I’ve been playing around with max and the client saw some examples I’d done (nothing to fancy), so he asked if we/I could produce some visualizations for him.
So for say 3 different photo montages how much would you charge? (I know it’s a bit of a ‘how long is a piece of string’ but… I can’t charge per hour due to an excessive learning curve, but ballpark how do you work out a realistic price? The same client had 3 done for the last scheme he did and it cost £6000, but that was done by an all singing all dancing CG House, hence the practice is eager to get into 3d viz but wants to charge realistic. I want to get it right because if the practice invests in Max it will be pushing it to all their clients... which will be an exciting opportunity for me

even a ball park is difficult to comment on unless you can show us an idea of the size of the scheme. for all we know it could be the size of a garden shed or the size of manchester united football ground. the 2 different prices wouldn't even be comparable.

Ha ha , good point the size of the proposed is 6 apartments @ 2000 sqft each and the site is here...

2000 sqft per appartment is pretty massive in the UK, and that site is relatively small, so i logically pressume you'll be building up. making it pretty tall.

im pressuming there'll be a fair amount of repartition in the design, and you'll not need any internals modelled other than rooms immediately behind the glass to show something there. and will the 3 montages be from a similar angle, or all around the site? because if it's from a similar angle you only need model those particular sides, ie, what you will actually see.

by going on those assumptions, it could take you maybe 1-2 working weeks to model and render and compose. tell the client 2-3 to be safe.

then because it's your first venture and you'll need to keep him happy i wouldn't charge no more than 4-5K all in. then negotiate on top of that if he requires any further work (ie, more montages, stand alone model shots, more brochure work, animations etc.)

but take that figure with your peice of string too. when your more established in this field and your work flow is more streamlined/efficient and your happy with the quality of your work then you might demand 5-6 or 7 k for the same work.

if it was me doing it freelance on my own i'd charge 5-6 K, without actually looking at the scheme and the scope of works. as long as the client is happy with your previous works and he's got confidence in you then he should be happy.

Nice one Strat, that was exactly the answer I was after...
It also means the the £6000 charged by the other company was about right since the scheme was very similar. Roll on the good times... or sleepless nights (I've got to do this one in my own time )
