as freelancers or small business owners, how do you all think the demand for this service is? I realize that my firm hates using 3d, but is often forced to because the client or developer demands it.

Hi,
what kind of firm are you working on, architectural? In my case there are three different businesses hiring my studio. Project (real estate) developers, architects and furniture/product designers. - Architects in my country only have their work done in 3D if there's a large budget involved otherwise they rely on their designer-skills (!) and present a shaded vectorworks or Arkey printout to the client. - Developers mostly use 3D to sell their projects to future house owners or to impress investors. They also decorate the walls in their offices with rendered blowups (they love it). - Product and furniture designers use high end 3D to save on expensive costs which comes along with the production of real prototypes. So basically our targets are still not very familiair with the 'niche' that is surrounding our area of expertise and I think I can speak for all 3D artists globally here. Regards, Dennis

No i don't charge the same amount compared to the time involved to be honest. (I don't work with an hourly rate, only on project bases). The point in here is that product and/or furniture designers use the artwork as a cumulative marketing/sales tool and an architect or project developer doesn't.
Another thing is that my work will save the costs involved in prototyping for the designers and that has it's price. Still, it's really big fun to dive in to a single product and get the most out of photorealism. If I only can do half of my time for product/furni it would be a big plus.

"I don't work with an hourly rate, only on project bases".
Could you explain and give any example how you get to your amount, please? Thanks
