Default Siggraph parties?

This will be my fourth year at Siggraph and I've always felt like I've gotten a lot out of it. However there has always been one thing I've felt like I've missed out on and that's the night life. There are tons of parties that I always hear about afterwards. It would be nice to know what I need to do to get in on them. I've gone to the Discreet and CGA parties, but what about the ones that the studious like Pixar, Disney, ILM, etc. throw? Or other big names like nvidia, ATI, Alias, etc.? Do you have to be invited? Register ahead of time? Or just walk in? How can I find out when and where they are being held? Thanks for any help.

Getting into parties, especially the best ones, which are always the Blur and Houdini parties (well except for the CGA party) is all about who you know and what strings you can pull. You can't walk into any of the big parties without an invite and getting one is quite literally like doing a drug deal. Almost all of the tickets are given away at the booths on the show floor, but they are usually done under a table, in a back room, or covertly. It's quite funny to watch. Your best bet is to ask all of your contacts at the show, your favorite vendors that know you and who has a ticket. And no you can't ask me...sorry. I had to pull favors from a friends, friends, friend to get tickets last year. LOL.

Brian

Face it. We're square. We're the arch-vis crowd. We're nothing. We're the little pond, so even a big fish (like me) is nothing. We are nothing. We mean nothing. No-one cares. We are not cool enough for the cool parties. That's why we have to set up our own party. Look for me there, I'll be the one searching my my long-lost mojo.

I used to be cool. I could have been somebody. Then I went 'arch-vis'. I was going to do sci-fi illustration.

This all reminds me of a Far Side cartoon that shown a pair of drunks in a garbage-strewn alley. On drunk, a large cockroach, is saying "you know, I used to be somebody, big executive. Till one day someone says 'hey, he's just a big bug'" That's me.

See you there, Brian.

Nice speech. Reminds me of "I coulda been a contender!"

Ernest, you sure this will be your first time at Siggraph? Because it sounds like you've got the routine down pretty good for arch-viz types there.

Anyway, I guess I'll keep my eyes and ears open for any tickets. Funny thing about it is I don't even drink, I just think it's fun to be in on where all the action is... which is of course the CGA party first and foremost.

ROTFLMAO LOL.

You crack me up Ernest.

BTW, another EXCELLENT way to get into the party is with a hot chick, well any female for that matter. The Blur party for example usually has the stipulation that one ticket admits one guy and 2-3 girls. It's also one of the few parties that actually has a relatively normal ratio of guys to girls. The SIGGRAPH chapters party for example, which is free BTW, is 99% guys. The only girls are usually the go-go dancers that 99.9% of the guys spend gaulking at all night. Arch-Viz or Entertainment, we're all a bunch of computer geeks.

We could pretend we are someone. Just hire two or three dudes in black suits and sunglasses to follow you all the time. Everybody will think you are somebody.

Ok, I got the girl... ut why hire the MIB? we should make a deal with 4 people and change the regular suit for the black one every hour or so... ;-p
Much cheaper! unfortunately, one is only important for a quarter of the party, and a real numb for 3/4 ;-ppp moeehahaha

The female is the real ticket, I think was the point. As for the shared suit, there is a wonderful Ray bradbury story "The Wondeful Ice Cream Suit" (also a 1998 film) about just that. But it's white.

It's OK being nothing. At least we don't congregate in costume.
