Sounds like it's a good thing the weather's cooling down there.

I could use a good economy. In fact, most any economy would be better than the one I got

Every once in a while I permit myself a daydream or two. One of my faves is having the time and means to do a car camping sojourn that meanders through the Southwest. I've liked the desert ever since a friend took me to Joshua Tree National Monument back in the '70s. Went to Death Valley the next year. Great stuff, especially in Spring and Autumn.

Then I watched this movie the other day, a 2003 independent by the name "Off the Map" with Joan Allen and Sam Elliott. After watching that movie, I figured I could probably spend the rest of my days in a place like that, especially if Joan Allen was there too It takes place in New Mexico, way out of the way. Check it out if you get a chance. It's not great, but not bad either. The place is grand though.

Exact address, as in location or email? I corrected my email here today. The old one was generating massive spam. Who knows how many forums I've forgotten to change though. As for street address, you can always get that from the Contacts page on my site.

Did you see that hokey shrub in the download? It's a quickie from a photo someone posted on mattepainting.org. It would be easy, except that I've spent the last two months converting thousands of files from .RIF to .TIF to .PSD to .TGA to .UFO to .TUB .GIH and back to .RIF again instead of painting.

Jeesh, you'd think I was earning a living do this stuff <g>

Anyone here use GIMP? I'm thinking about supporting it for PS owners who don't want to purchase another application just to use tools PS doesn't have.

You must surely recognize this tree then. They're everywhere, and many about this age (except for the park and Esplanade).

I'm no tree expert, but I'm sure I've seen it around here.

I just moved back here 3 months ago, after being away for 25 years, and I was really surprised to see most of those trees from the downtown park were gone! Now, because of the redesign, all but about 3 are gone--it looks naked. That project is being done by the firm that I'm now working for, btw. I hope it turns out ok.

Me neither. I just make the tools to paint them. Those are sycamores, of course. Very poplular in the newer developments, along with sweetgums and tulip trees. I've grown to like podicarpus myself. Decorative, little maintenance, but no autumn coloration either (or fallen leaves).

I came back after 15 years, 1995.

Yes, sad to see them go. Those old elms were a real danger though. Too big and the limbs were prone to fracture. Since they run evening concerts there on Fridays during the warm weather, it was a disaster waiting to happen. In fact, a few years ago the University had a graduation ceremony beneath one of the old elms on campus. Several hundred in attendance. Not two hours after a big limb fractured and fell where the crowd had gathered.

It does look like a wasteland, especially when it's 110 out. Not a spec of shade. Just a square block of ground exposed to the blistering sun. It sure cleared out the slackers and homeless though. (Have you noticed the number of homeless? I lived here in the '70s and there were none. I don't recall ever seeing a homeless person. Now they're ubiquitous, taken for granted. Not the future I imagined back then.)
