The most common file type, that I deal with, coming from architects is the AutoCAD .dwg file format. It can have z coordinates, but not that I ever deal with. AutoCAD can produce 3D files, but they are not automatically useful for a modelling/rendering program. I import the 2D .dwg plans & elevations as guides to build on in Autodesk VIZ or MAX.

autocad dwg is the most common myself and my clients use too. personally, i model everything in 3d in autocad first before importing into a rendering app. i dont use cad solids though. all face drawn.

sometimes i use sketchup -some client used it- and it could open all version of autocad files -at least till A2005-. personally, it is faster for non organic design as i render it using accurender 2 pluggin for autocad r.13
