Default xiaogeliu-final

The Past Or The Future

The concept of the dome is to provide visitors a pause to reflect the human past and think of the future. Everybody may have very individual and different views. With this image, I try to create a place where visitors lose their time reference. Are they in an archaeological site that has existed for thousands of years? Or, does the time-machine bring them to the future where they can see what human beings really need? The image is not to deliver an answer, but open a space for everyone to think.

Modeling/Texturing: Fabulous job, the modeling brings interest to the space and moves your eye around the image. However, the upper left corner is distracting.
Lighting: The entire space is well lit.
Composition: Overall nice but some parts are awkward and some are heavy. It would be nice to see something in the structure in the foreground.
C/O/D: There is a good overall creativity and central theme. It appears as though the artist thought about and achieved the look they were after.
Unity: Nicely unified.
Brief: Successful but a bit overly decorative.

Strengths:
The modeling and especially the texturing are detailed throughout the whole image and well done/crafted. He manages to show almost the whole dome in the chosen camera view which supports a sense of spaciousness and gives a good overview. The lighting is well done with nice contrasts and works well with the background image to create an overall atmosphere.

Weaknesses:
Some of the texturing in the foreground looks mapped and distorted. Some objects, like left birds with motion blur seem out of place. Overall the space and structure looks like too much going on in the image, too much use of 'library of ancient Chinese artifacts'. Lack of plants. The project misses the competition brief.

Overall a risky and techincally demanding image that in general works well. But we are not seeing enough of the brief in the rendering. Still we admire the artist shooting for the moon on this one.

Modeling/Texturing: Wow, this entry is all about the modeling & texturing. Amazing attention has been given to surfaces throughout the image, but possibly to the point of distraction.
Lighting: Very nice, and the lit gazebo at the lower left helps to keep the foreground from being too dark. I also like the lighting of the ring at the base of the tower. The upper right is a pretty heavy though.
Composition: Overall pretty good, but it feels left-heavy as though something is missing in the right foreground. Maybe another gazebo? I'm not sure if cropping the right side is the answer but it just feels out of balance. The way the lighting is coming in, it may have been more interesting to see what's happening off-camera to the left rather than completing the arc of the handrail. Additionally, the tree at the upper left is a distraction from what is otherwise a very well-rendered dome structure.
C/O/D: A lot of creativity & orginality here, and obviously a lot of technical difficulty is evident in the texturing. The different historical devices used throughout give the image a great deal of interest.
Unity: Overall, the image has a strong sense of unity, everything seems to belong there which is a real accomplishment. My only complaint is the the lighting & texturing in the upper right corner.
Brief: I wish more attention had been paid to activating the scene with more people and landscaping. But overall you've created a compelling image and stayed reasonably close to the brief.

wow look at all that detail! Is this kind of busyness conducive to meditation......hmmmm! The lighting and focus are good but I can't see any people. There's also something strange happening to the perspective - the stretched elipses are a little uncomfortable perhaps.

A little bit over the top, you should let the architecture speak for itself, clean lines flatter this space. Its an impressive image, but seems to hit the wrong mark.
Also another problem with forcing the perspective.
