It could be that the object you applied the emitter to has its normal’s flipped, or the emitter material it's self is turned off or the wattage is very low.

Are you rendering from a plugin, or from Studio?

Apply your emitter to a solid, like a sphere, and see if it still is black. Also, does the emitter thumbnail material show up as black?

yes i did try applying it to a plane. yes the preview is white as it should be. i was thinking it may be a scene scale issue?

Well you could crank up the emitters value to a ludicrous level to see if it is illuminating the scene. I have heard of this problem with scenes containing old maxwell information mixed together with current mats.

If changing the values of your emitter does nothing, I would suggest moving it to Studio and trying it there. Apply the default mat to every object in your scene, then create a new emitter in Studio and apply it to your plane. Crank up the level of the emitter and see if you get a result. Double check the normals direction.

This should get a result, if it doesn't, try posting the file and I am sure someone will help take a look at it for you.

If it is Rhino, I would be happy to check it.
