Post boolean?

I'm having a problem. I have a kitchen worktop and I need to put a round sink into it. What is the best way to do this. Is boolean the best way? Basically I need to know how to cut a round shape into another shape and for it to be smooth. Cheers

boolean should be fine, depending on what state your initial meshes are like, and what software you'll be using. shapemerge is even better for punching out holes. personally, i'd construct the new shape in either sketchup or autocad before i rely on booleaning. bools will more often than not give nasty mesh results. even if it works, a clean mesh is desirable.

definately depends on what software your modelling in... if its viz or max avoid booleans as much as possible, if its CAD then Boolean is fine.

Post Re: boolean?

yeh sorry, I forgot to say it's in 3ds max. So the best thing to do is import CAD drawings and extrude, yeh?

yeap, create an ouline that is your worktop and create an outline that is the hole for your sink.

in max make sure they are part of the same editable spline and use the extrude modifier... this will give you your worktop with a hole in it.

alternatively, if your working from CAD you could model the worktop in 3D, extrude your outlines and boolean one from the other, and then import the 3D geometry into max.
