has anyonme got to grips with the viz 4 area lights and shadow. I cant get area shadows to render and dont know where to get Ies files for them.

hey grant. For area shadows to render properly u need to tweak its properties (pass1 pass2, blur, etc) in the "Area Shadows Properties". Look up the Viz 4 Help for Area Shadows; it's very well explained with examples.

As for IES files, there are a lot of manufacterers that offer IES files and Fixtures on the net. U can look fo www.erco.com www.ledalite.com and others like Zumbotel (forgot the URL), etc

thanks, had a look, and have experimented with them, what I was getting at specifically was the ability to light a whole room with one box light and the consequental settings for shadows and where you would get this type of ies file if it existed. will persevere and update with my findings.
