Hi all,
As some of you may know we have opted to move this year's DMVC to coincide with the AIA (American Institute of Architects) mid May. The dates have not been 100% finalized, but will likely be several days before the start of the AIA conference. I am currently in the process of planning the sessions and wanted to get feedback from the group here: 1. What type of visualization sessions would you be interested in attending? 2. Which speakers would you like to see? 3. Are there any BIM/Intelligent modeling sessions that you would like to see that you think would be relevant to you as a visualizer or out of personal interest for how the industry is moving in this direction? Because of the venue change this year, we will be running concurrent visualization and BIM tracks, so your feedback is important. As some of you will likely ask, I'm uncertain if we will also run the DMVC after SIGGRAPH as has been done the last two years. It's a possibility, but nothing has been scheduled as of yet. Cheers, Jeff

I would rather see content on what makes good images than anything software specific. I have worked with architectural photographers and they think about lighting a space in a completely different way than most visualizers do, and it seems like so many of us are working with photo real images we should know how photographers approach their work. I am thinking Architectural Digest, Dwell, top end magazines. Get their photographers.

Jeff-
Why the change of venues? (AIA vs. siggraph) Also, when you are finalizing the dates please make sure (to the best of your ability) that the DMVC dates are right next to the AIA conference dates. If I'm going to be flying to Boston, It would be nice to be able to attend both events. |

Sounds like a pretty good plan, Jeff. I've been to one Siggraph and honestly didn't find it beneficial enough to attend again. The DMVC is another story... ;-)
I think I may have made this comment already on one of the post-conference surveys, but I think Ernest Burden's talk at the first conference in Boston was the most insightful from a visualizer's standpoint. His dissection of architectural rendering's comparisons to traditional portraiture was brilliant, and even as someone who attended an art college it was a great refresher to hear him discuss elements of composition, color, line, etc. in renderings. His hour-long lecture was over far too quickly. Also I really enjoyed the panel in San Diego with Jorge Tiscareno, Kevin Smith, and Scott Baumberger -- but the emphasis was too much on the business of archviz. What about putting together a similar session but focus more intently on production methods, workflows, and success stories? Panel members could each present a project and overview its production process before opening up to questions and discussion. Shaun |

On the other hand if you do have a section covering compositing for animation, I would prefer to see someone from neoscape, spine3d, or uniform, give an presentation about one of their productions that is more aimed towards architectural visualization. Vlad Bina's presentation last year on advanced visualization, was directed more towards the movie industry not the design industry..... most of it went straight over my head (yes I realized advanced was in the title), but I walked away from the short 15 min presentation grasping about 5% of what was just presented to me, and although I did see a lot of cool stuff, I don't foresee any of it being incorporated into my workflow anytime in the near future. I do enjoy seeing the aspects of the movie industry and how we can learn and gain from their workings..... but the other concurrent sessions that were held during that part of the DMVC last year were design based (sketchup and BIM/Revit) so I had assumed that vlad's presentation was going to be as well. My only issue is with the concurrent sessions. I understand we have limited time to work with, but last year, I wanted to attend the Sketchup stuff as well as Mental Ray, but could not. |
