I think this question will be talked about enough to merit a thread of its own.

Also, what about the Design Visualization Competition? If you plan to wrap that up at DMVC, the competition better kick off real soon. Or are we doing away with that? I hope not. |

Personally, I'm more than just a little bummed about it not being at Siggraph, because it means I won't be attending. I'm really disappointed because I've been to every Siggraph CGA party/event since the very beggining. Although if BIM is what you plan on focusing on now, I'm not sure how interested I would be in going for the presentations. How many of us here at CGA are really that interested in 2 days focusing on BIM? Siggraph for me is about inspiration, and BIM just doesn't do that for me. I realize that you don't want to cater solely to those of us who troll the forums here, but I have to imagine that we have represented a decent percentage of those who have attended in the past.
Will we be having any sort of get together at Siggraph? Something like the old parties were perhaps? We have to have some sort of venue for Evert to rock on the piano. One other thing worth mentioning: As a couple others have mentioned in another thread. More of what Ernest did in '05 and less BIM and Buisness would suit my taste... for whatever that's worth at this point.

I don't think tagging along with any conference whether it be SIGGRAPH or AIA has any bearing on the type of topics we would cover on the marketing visualization end. At the end of the day we are our own conference. Being at AIA does not preclude the sessions from covering topics about the art of the industry. In fact, this year I plan to focus on that more than any of the previous conferences.
The decision to be at AIA just makes sense to grow the conference. We need to be attracting a lot more than 250 attendees and to do that we need to include other areas of the industry. SIGGRAPH does not help on this end. The parallels with SIGGRAPH are far fewer than AIA and overall the feedback we have received is that a lot did not see the value in SIGGRAPH given it's so heavily focused on gaming and entertainment. Not totally relating to your comment, but one thing I think many in our industry are not connecting with is the convergence of areas like BIM, mapping, city modeling, energy analysis etc to our own. Granted there will always be a separation due to the different end uses, but unlike our traditional media counterparts, by virtue of the fact we know and understand 3D modeling and how to visualize digitally, means there will be many ways and potential business opportunities for the design and visualization sides of the industry to work much closer together in the coming years. There will be changes in the way we all work, so it's important for even illustrators to understand what's going on around them. On the competition end, because the decision to move to May was made just before the holidays, there is simply not enough time to hold the CGA awards at the conference this year. I might be able to do the 3Dawards, but certainly not the AVC. I still plan on doing that this year, but how and when has yet to be determined. I have been speaking with the organizers of the Mundos Digitales conference and there is a good chance the awards for the AVC will be held in Spain. The winner will likely also be flown in. This has yet to be finalized though.

Ok, let me be clear about this. The marketing visualization end of the DMVC is NOT going away. We are just adding more BIM type related content. Based upon the prelim schedule I have now there will be a lot more content for both sides of the field. For Day 1 alone I have 10 sessions + a keynote. There will be a lot to choose from, enough that you won't be able to see eveything you'll want to. Day 2 tentatively has 6 training sessions, at least half of which will be visualization based. Don't fear, we're not being left behind.

Why not then piggyback onto Autodesk University? I would think that would be more relevant than the AIA conference and would also be a conference that 90% of the CGA users could co-attend. I was really looking forward to going to Siggraph and the DMVC this year, now I don't know what I'll end up doing. |

Even at last years convention I heard conversations about when DMVC would pull away from Siggraph to be a convention all of it's own. If it's grabbed some popularity from tagging up to Siggraph, one could hope it will benefit and pull in more interest from tagging up to AIA for a bit before pulling off with enough attendance to support being on it's own completely.
I too was looking forward to trying to hit siggraph as well this year, but the more I think about it, I may have better luck with my company putting in for two separate "important" conferences instead of trying to get them to sign off on an entire week out of the office. Siggraph is kind of locked into a rut that seems to keep bringing them back to LA, assuming it's due to space requirements for such a large convention. On the bright side of things, it will be nice to have DMVC move around the country more to keep it interesting. Last edited by BrianKitts; January 21st, 2008 at 06:36 AM. |

I think aligning with AIA is a great choice. After all, our industry is Arch Viz and many of us are trained as architects. Autodesk University is a good idea also, but we shouldn't limit ourselves to one software platform.

I like the association with AIA. IF there was a need for crossover its with our clients. I thought there was too much BIM at lasts year DVMC. I guess I would like to hear more about the line up for this years courses.

We have not signed the contract for the hotel yet, but I don't think we will be using the same hotel. Details will be posted on the DMVC site as soon as we finalize the details.
