Default hair and fur rug

just making my first attempt on a rug in MR/Max2008 and was looking for help from anyone regarding hair and fur, it doesn't look quite right to me??

does anybody have an good settings for hair and fur for big fluffy rugs

also having a problem with interiors in general.

when using the sky portal to light interiors, it always appears really really bright at the window but what i want to achieve is nice soft lighting that allows me to put a nice backdrop outside of the window??? any clues

attached is my rug attempt (you can also see the window effect i am talking about in the background - and the sky portal isn't visible to renderer)
