I have been working on this really simple animation everything is fine but the building has siding when I try to animate the siding I get that staircasing effect really bad. orangemad So what can I do to get rid of this? I have tried hitting a few of the different aa filters and I have turned on supersampling. Still getting it. I just am not hip on animation enough to know what is going on.

As alwayse any help would be great.

Cheers

Siding is cladding, either in aluminium or timber, usually with horizontal bands.
Moire patterning is what the staircase effect is.
I would suggest turning up the AA, but you did that. How about getting a higher res image of the siding to use as a material? Or cheating and scaling up the siding a little so the panels are larger?

if you are using a bump map on the siding, you might want to lower the bump, or try removing all together.

I have sometime that kind of problem. In my bitmap texture setting there is a filter with radio button saying "pyramidal" "summed area" and "none". Take the "summed area", it lineair small bitmap line more carefully. You will still see a little bit of stairing but less powerful. It cold also be a color misinterpretation of the software when a little bit of red is in it (perhaps) good luck.

I had a similar problem with window mullions. While the default supersampling (Max 2.5 Star) works pretty well with repeating bump maps like brick, for physically repeating elements I've had better luck with the Adaptive Uniform supersampler.

You may also want to try applying a different anti-aliasing to the rendering.

Or, if you've got plenty of time on your hands check out multi-pass rendering - more time per frame, but a sharper image. Great for still shots, but not recommended for animations unless you have a LOT of time.

Good Luck!

Here is a pict

That is kind of a screen shot, the camera track just walks around the building. The client wanted a rush and it was a real rush. Really silly and I wasnt able to add much detail. No bitmaps everything is procedural. They (client) liked it but I really want to re render it to have an animation for my protfolio. I was able to get the animation to work without moire (or with little) but the only way I could do it was by resizing up (larger output). That is fine but I will never be able put it on a web site.
orangeno

I guess what I am wondering is have I come to "the" solution or should I just rework it again? Try something else?

Don't render a bump map in animation. Add some gridlines in the diffuse map, but make them too much draker or lighter than the sidings color.
