Default Derek Jackson - WIP

Loving the comp so far - it's amazing to see how many different designs can come from the same brief!

Right then, images of the initial base model attached.

I'm going for a curvy, natural form embedded in the slope. The idea is that when the visitors arrive in the atrium they're given an amazing framed view out of the back of the building up to the tower. From there they can go straight to the tower, or stop off in the museum, cafe, shop, etc.

It'll be a very eco building with a green roof and lots of sustainable design features - wind turbines, etc.

The combination of grass roof and curvy form should mean it blends into the landscape, so much so that when you look back at it from the tower, all you can see of it is the framed window rising out of the ground.

Gonna use a viewpoint similar to either image 1 or 2 for the still - I'll make use of the other viewpoints in the animation.

I'm thinking a grey, rainy day for the image - not stormy, just bleak and windy. Lots of muted grey, greens and browns.

Looking nice.
The curvy facade suits the terrain which is nice.
The shots you attached are interesting and to see them in an animation would be a blast.
The shades you are describing remind me of one of your images (hint: Boston conference image)

Guess we better prepare ourselves and carry an umbrella at all times until the end of this challenge.

Cheers and GL !

Yeah, I guess I have a thing for rainy days! Must be living in England that does it.

Right, not much new to report - just detail added.

I'd like to stretch the curvy roof over the box shape on the left but I'm running out of time - unfortunately I'm rendering the whole project in Maxwell , which means I need to set it going either Friday or Saturday, so it doesn't leave me much time for edits!

I'm trying to get across the idea of terraces representing layers of time - there's a stepped effect on the internal floors which I'm trying to continue outside with the basement terrace on the box element.

Pretty sure I'll use the viewpoint of the second image (WIP 6) for my final image.

Derek

Ok, i really like the shot you've chosen..i mean i can completely imagine it finished and propped up! could look really good especially if you play the rainy environment right!

your building design is very sustainable and will have amazing views from the inside which is great! and i love how it just blends in... I' d really hate walking Up all these steps on the way back!

now technically, what's with the super-High poly count for the centre roof?! i mean when you're planning to use a such a 'real-based' renderer knowing how slow it's going to be, don't you think that polycount is just a tad-bit too high?! i mean the only reason i can think about is for grass displacement, but if that was the case, would'nt you consider the rest of the hill too?! just afraid it might stand out as 'artificial' looking! surely you must have considered other mapping / texturing solutions?!

Yeah, it is pretty high! I created the roof surface using both C Meshes and Nurbz in Form Z but I couldn't get it to extrude into a solid form without there being weird issues with it. Cos I was pushed for time I just decided to go for a facetted surface, and therefore needed to make it pretty high res to keep it smooth!

I'll see if I can cut the number of polys down before I render it. The main thing I've learnt from this so far is that I definitely need more practice with Nurbz!!

Glad you like it. Wish I had more time to develop the concept and the form, but there we go. That's what I get for using Maxwell!

I really like your concept. I love the "earth-ship" feal to it with a modern touch--very environmental. And your design concept has enough flare to it, to be a great feature of the site without disrtacting from the main attraction.

I look forward to seeing how well you pull off the terrain and landscape.

Spent the day working on the terrain. It's no masterpiece, but it gives me the flexibility I need for both close up and distant shots. Never want to see another cliff again in my life though!

Time for a bottle of red, I think!

Well its looking more tidy now, much better. Did you cut the cliffs and make them shorter?

I like the interior view looking at the tower a lot. I am not sure if I like the fact that you modify the terrain to bring the cliffs closer to you building though.
