Here is my "space lighthouse". There is a base of 3d, but all of this is a 2D drawing. 3D in the next challenge.
Maybe it is different from the rest, but I have so much fun doing it good luck to all! David.

Congrats on finishing the image.
Your concept was very creative from the start. Looking at your first WIP stages and drawings it really was promising. Although its looking nice - there are certain issues that make it look obvious that it was post processed in a 2d illustration package - the volume fog and the red lamps (that are left with little variance) on the edges of your 'claws' . Although the composition is nice its mostly photomontage - which is hard to blame since its a view on a city or two behind the site and creating each and every building could turn out being very teedious. At first when your concept was fluorishing I though of a different angle - perphaps closer to see all the fine detailing on the construction of your 'claws' and action inside - cafe's etc. Im guessing work deadlines were standing in the way, since Ive seen some of your great works in your porftolio. One more issue is that the tower would be pretty covered once viewing from the ocean. Overall your concept is very original. Cheers and good luck! Jakub

David...
Great looking image over all. you've got smart painting skills. i can see you took your back ground plate from the first tower video footage which is kinda disappointing cause very the low reasolution of the image. anyway the composition and design is superb. really hi-tech & futuristic. your city scape and water reflection painting is great i love it. But it should be clean as a final product which its not. more like a conceptual sketch. well done!! |

Awesome!
The animation is going to kick ass for this one! You can add some serious soundtrack and make those things open up slowly and then the burst of light right into the space and then you have a quick view from space and see the beam of llight! Your decision is very inspiring, I am looking forward for the animation! Good luck!!! |

David,
I really like your design and concept. I was very inspired by some of the sketches that you posted in your WIP. I was also expecting to see some the interior of the building. I am a bit disappointed about your rendering though. The camera match is almost perfect but I feel a little bit cheated about the fact that your illustration is mostly 2D. In any case, the back plate looks low res next to the crisp rendering of the tourist center. There are a couple of issues with the matte painting but the overall look is there. I am sure that the animation is going to be very challenging. I know I want to see the tourist center from the sky :P Good luck! E |

Nice picture. Interesting design; I fail to see how this relates though, maybe my concept of what a visitor centre (hey, i helped design + visualise handfuls) is too literal.
Like Christiaan, i'm looking forward to seeing how you're going to animate this scene given its huge dependancy on 2D, -maybe a creative interpretation of 'animation' to match your visitor centre could work. I've got to ask though; - Have you pulled inspiration from the video game Halo? |

David, you definitely went for the drama and I appreciate that. I can see from your WIP posts that you struggled with the scale of your design and I do have to say that I still have a problem with it myself. I understand the concept of a lighthouse to be seen from the air and perhaps space and it is in concept very interesting. I do think that what it does here is completely upstage and almost literally engulf the inspiration for this competition which is the Tower itself - especially when the "petals" are open as in your image. I think it would still work if the design was scaled down a bit.
The conversion of the photo from day to night is pretty convincing, especially given the time you had to do it. It looks like you went beyond the directive of the competition and "designed" some buildings in downtown La Coruna as well The lighting is well done and in some ways really makes me want to see more of what's inside those petals. And after seeing the sprinkling of lights you added throughout the image I wish more of the paths around the Tower were illuminated a bit as well. Overall an ambitious image, and despite the scale issues for me I think a successful one. Thanks for sharing.
