Read the A&D shader pdf in the help folder

This one is fine for pre Max9, since Max9 (more specifically max2008 and later) this workflow has changed alot

Good point. I used this one prior to going to V-Ray.

I wonder if any of the tuts that ship with Max have an FG only lighting approach?

They run through both methods. mr went through a big change in Max9 and again in max 2009. Things are much easier now.

I recently posted these from another thread:

Here's a great reference that convinced me that mental ray can do what vray can do. I don't even think that vray has came up with a reference book like this.

Realistic Architectural Visualization with 3ds Max and Mental Rray
by Roger Cusson & Jamie Cardoso

Another good tutorial reference was featured recently in 3D World Magazine issue no. 93 titled:
