I know there are always going to be bitter people in this industry who don't agree with the way someone is doing something, but this Private message today REALLY rubs me the wrong way. I've removed the name, but this person has 1 post on the site and felt compelled to send me this about the 3D awards competition. My replies interjected.

I'd hazard a guess that I've put more time into into organizing and setting up the scoring for this competition than most people spend on two production images, probably 10 images if you factor in the AVC too, and yet this guy feels compelled to extol his "wisdom" upon me. My wife just last night asked why I was not spending more time with her and what "I" was getting out of doing all of this. My reply was "nothing". She was not impressed. I'm walking around like a zombie as I'm so sleep deprived, and then this idiot, sends me the message above. I know I should not let the opinion of one person get under my skin like this, and that he does likely not reflect the opinions of the masses, but people like this drive me nuts. I bet this guy would not last 4 days working the hours I do.

I think I speak for the majority here when I say we're extremely grateful for all the amazing hard work you do on this site.
You are well aware that you shouldn't let remarks from a solitary individual like this rub you the wrong way, but we all get got sometimes! As this "person" is not in the immediate vicinity, suggest you go kick the cat a couple of times...........will make you feel better mate! |

Agreed, you've done an amazing job with this site it's the premiere Arch Viz site in the world all thanks to you. There's always going to be someone who has something to complain about and you can't make everyone happy. You should be extremely proud of what you've done for this community, we are all better illustrators because of you're work.

Serendipity.
"...My wife just last night asked...", "...and then this idiot..." Go and be with your Wife. The conference is over, the AVC is all but done. We can "hold the fort" for a while. Have a good break, S. |

This is the first time I've submitted work to one of these competitions. I don't know if any of it made the final cut but if not I respect the process of how that first cut is made. I have been a judge and I know firsthand how hard and time-consuming it can be. Entering is easy. Judging is hard.
The hardest part of judging is cutting works you like. I want them all to win, but they can't. So I have to keep narrowing down the 'ups' by making tough choices. I hate it when a piece I think is good falls below the next level of elimination. The entries become 'yours', you root for your favorites and want to see them go all the way. So how do you do it, how do you judge art or grade art of students? You try to remove the intangibles and find a set of criteria that you can apply more-or-less fairly. Examples would be 'lighting', 'modeling' or 'impact'. Jeff Mottle has always set up criteria for judges to use when scoring these competitions, and that's precisely why its so much work. It is anything but arbitrary and requires time to consider each piece on a number of levels. Jeff--don't worry about it and listen to Julia. I've gotten the same questions from my wife and its important to listen to people who care about us. |

jeff, you do a fantastic job here. this forum has become my homepage and i can't remember the last time i visited cgtalk. i personally am so grateful for you for putting the time and effort into the competition, and having not even entered it i can say that i still gained a lot just from following the WIP's and seeing the styles and skills that are out there. it is the best networking resource for our industry and an invaluable source for comments, critique and help and advice. don't let this one idiot get you down. you've done great things here and anyone with two braincells to rub together can see that. there are several pints on me if i ever get to meet you. |
