i can't seem to figure out how and where to use the SKY PORTAL light option in 3d studio max 2009. can anyone help direct me to it? was it taken out from 2008?

Create -> Lighting (Photometric) -> mr Sky Portal

Make sure Mental Ray renderer is the default render

It's in Max 2008 and Max 2009 Design

that's what i thought... but it's not there... any ideas? i even looked through the user reference and didn't find any information on it.

Check any missing plugin in the loading menu

also I Think you have to reinstall max . because the portals exists

Just make sure that Mental Ray is set as your render engine. The MR specific stuff won't turn up if it's not selected. Other than that, use my generic Everything-is-a-nail-and-the-only-tool-I-have-is-a-hammer fix:

Sandman,

i'm assuming you recommend deleting that file [or at least renaming it].

i checked the plugin manager and i can't find anything missing.

i really don't want to reinstall, do you think the plugin is on the DVD?

If I have a weird problem with the interface, I just rename that file.
Max will re-create it nice and fresh.

thanks... but it appears it's a no go.

i believe the problem is i have 3d studio max 2009 [not design]. i wonder why they left that plugin out for the regular 3d studio max. is there a way to upgrade to get it?

ahh...

Maybe not, but it was in Max 2008.

You need to check your installation/version because portal lights ARE included in 2009 & Design 2009.
