Well now I'm just going to have to mock you, because as you said the question has been asked and answered. Not surprisingly, the Intel person was correct. And you can guess, I am sure, the reason you can find no information on dual socket MBs for Core 2 Quad chips.
It's because... ready for this?... can you guess what's coming?... There is no such thing as a dual Core 2 Quad system. Only CPUs that use the 771 socket, such as Xeons and some Extremes, can go dual; socket 775 CPUs, such as Core 2 Quad, Core 2 Duo and Pentium 4, can not. |

so if I am planning for a dual processor i shall move on to xeon
but as i have found that although the processor cost being the same appx for xeon 5405 (2 GHZ) and Q6600 (2.4 GHZ) the complete Machine will be on higher side due to a server board and ECC ram when i move to xeon. is thr some way out or should i go for dual xeons.

If you go with dual processors its worth considering paying extra to get a motherboard based on the 5400 chipset (designed for the xeon 54xx series).
They can support faster ram (FB DDR2 800) and a faster FSB (1600). Not only will this provide you with better upgrade options in the future, with a speck of electrical tape and the faster memory, a E5405 should overclock from 2.00G at 1333fsb to 2.4G at 1600fsb. More power for less! You'll have to do you research first to make sure you get the right components, but its worth the effort. |
