I recently installed 3dsmax 2008 on my new system to help out a friend with a file, as he hasn't upgraded to 2009 I couldn't open it otherwise and be able to send it back.

So now my problem is all my 3dsmax files when selected in explorer are trying to open with 2008 instead of 2009. So the question is how to I switch the file type back to defaulting to open with 2009.

I've gone into the tools>folder options> file types and tried to switch the .MAX files to open with the right version of max but it doesn't seem to be working. It lists two "3dsmax application" options in the open as dialogue, but they both have the 2008 icon. So I'm guessing that because they are both 3dsmax.exe that it can't distinguish between the change....even though I'm using the browse option and selecting the right version.

I'm hoping someone knows where I can go to hard code in the path for the program options or something.

I'm having a similar problem, if I double click on a max file in explorer it always tries to open with the 32-bit version instead of the 64-bit one. Even though I've navigated to the 64-bit 3dsmax.exe manually and ticked always open with this application.

Though I guess maybe uninstalling the 32-bit version might do the trick in this case.

Can't you set that in the open with 'Choose Program' menu? theres a checkbox to always use the newly selected program.

I've found that windows will use the last program that was used to work on a file type. So open a max file with max2009 (already open), from then on you should be able to open a file with max2009 just by double-clicking on it. YMMV.

Tried that, windows can't distinguish between versions because to the menu it's just 3dsmax.exe and 3dsmax.exe it keeps reverting to the last version installed.

I ended up getting the answer last night from my post on TheArea's forum.

basically same deal only this was a direct link for where to edit the registry.

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\3dsmax\shell\Open\command
..and the value is:
“C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max 2009\\3dsmax.exe” “%1”

Didn't work at first, then gave the machine a reboot and all was well.
