Ok, please correct me if I'm wrong. Ballistic doesn't pay anyone royalties. Those who get selected get a free book and an award. They probably make a huge profit.

Anyone have any feelings on this?
Mine are mixed.

I think if I had an image that made it into the book, that would be compensation enough for me.

If I had entered an image, chances are that it would have been a job that I had already gotten paid on by the client who asked me to do it. So I wouldn't really expect any compensation for the image other than what it was primarily created for.

And for those that created images specifically for Expose, then thats a personal choice. Most people that do CG do it either because somebody is paying them to do it, or just for fun and experience. There are thousands of great cg images out there, but you will rarely find somebody that is willing to pay for the rights to some random image.

Either way, I think getting your work published is a great reward. As far as I know, Expose is the only book that features architectural cg so I would be pretty satisfied just seeing my name in there. And a free book would be great too! I really wanted to get the first one, but was too strapped for cash to get one.

Yup getting your work in Expose should be award enough. I know the guys at Expose quite well and trust me no one is retiring on that venture. Sure they are going to make a profit, otherwise they would not do it. If you knew the ammount of work they put into publishing that book you would probably agree. In any case no one is forced into submitting images so in the end if you don't think it's fair, don't submit.

Some offer compensation some don't. It is really not at issue here. This is more a gallery type situation than a profit type situation. Sure the gallery owner makes money off your image but you still have full rights to your piece and usually the gallery brings good exposure. With Expose the royalties would have been about 1/4 a cent per image and so far I don't think millions have been sold (Expose 1 was 192 pages with 1-3 images per page). not only does a publication like that help each artist who was chosen but the book helps the industry as a whole.

Even when you get paid for that kind of work it is often just token money. Recently I was asked to illustrate a cover piece and an inside spread piece for a local newspaper. They had a flat fee and it was sooo low I was working well below minimum wage. I also only had 6 days to have the final images done. I did it for the experiance not the cash. I would much rather do another Expose image than get paid for a job like that.

This is the way I see it. You could expect to pay £100's for advertising in a Magazine, Publication. I see it as a bit of free advertising. And if you get a free book then bonus, they are actually paying you to be in their book.

If expose becomes very lucrative, I think its bad PR to not pay the artists whose work they're making money off of.

Most of us don't do what we do so we can get our work published in a book and get paid for it. Writers, on the other hand, do. That is the ONLY way they will ever get paid for their work, is when its published.

Getting our work published is a nice bonus, and yes, free advertising.
