Angry Real Interior lightning on max

Hi all,
Need help with this one...
For my finals in architecture I drew mine design of a villa in acad and textured in max, where 'real' lighting is crucial; but i can't get the right setting in max to produce them. And because of multiple scene's, i want a global good lightning and no or not much changing each scene. Guys of Discreet; how difficult can you make it! The problem shouldn't be that difficult. I need good exterior daylight entering and reflecting...a dream so far. My scene is setup in mm. and I hope someone can give me his/the settings (of Mray) One omni; 6 omni's; a glowing sphere (JOSKE, if you read this, how do you make one); etc.ect.
Hope u can help.
Stan

if you're using max standard renderer then might as well read about radiosity in the user reference! try reading searching for the ff: key words

radiosity
transmittance and reflectance
advance lighting
subdivision

after this you'll know what to do..
btw, always model everythin to scale!

do you want to go only with Mray ?

because u can try radiosity first ... it can give you good results.

With Mray u can try putting a MR spotlight as your sun, also put a skylight
Then put a inverted sphere or box around your entire scene - that's for not loosing your photons.

then inside your room i'd put cople mr spotlights and omnis for your interior fixtures.

But the best place to get some good info is on CGtalk forums. Here's a link for Mental Ray interior lighting... the talk about settings, options everything you need to know, you can also get a example file with a good setup to see how it works ....

http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=120241

anyway , let me know if that helps ... if not then I can give you more detail info ...

Sounds to me like you need to do some reading and tutorials before worrying about getting it 'real'. There are a million settings and a million variations for each problem, you simply cannot expect a one-button-does-all solution.

Also, I would suggest you make your posts a little clearer. Simply stating that you 'can't seem to make a real lighting solution' and the 'guys of Discreet make this too hard' will not get you any helpful responses. You need specifics for people to have an idea of what you are doing. Images are good, too.

OK,
Thanx for the first tips, The last weeks I just focussed on Mray to do the job, i will try to give radiosity a chance.
For some more specific info, I show you a scene i try to render with Mray. I had to increase the photon-area to reduce rendertime, but this image (640*480) took me about 10 hours to render and it is still far from good; but has a nice indirect lightning (a bit to dark and need to increase Energy a little).I placed 2 omin's in the main light-source places (windows) and a spot playing as sun. (see image) the settings i used is also in an image. Though, even if ican get this one ok, i have to adjust each scene and i try to skirt around that problem.
...hmmm having problems inserting images due to an error on the page. i put them on my homepage on

mental ray for 3dsmax 6 and VIZ 2005 does not support Daylight Simulations physically correctly as Radiosity does. It only supports the Sky with Final Gather. GI will not render the IES Sun, and you'll have to use other tools for that, making your render not "accurate".

If you need accuracy and realism and you're using Daylight, you need to use Radiosity and the scanline renderer.

interior and exterior in the same render is very hard to achieve with Mray
it might be easier to split the scene in two and have the outside camera positions and the interior ones divided

outside i setup the scene as here :
http://www.cgarchitect.com/vb/showth...1&page=4&pp=10
see post n°40

for inside setup have a look here :
http://www.cgarchitect.com/vb/showth...7&page=3&pp=10
post n°23 - 25

hope this will put you on your way...

but don't expect it to be easy and fast, i've been learning 3D from 1995 and still learning new stuff every day... you never know enough

(I started with 3d studio r4 in DOS at that time, not even in windows )

I only use spots, direct and omnis for my fakeocity effects but i have used the skylight light with a secondary light to get a realistic looking effect. Sometimes it is a bit fuzzy and I will sharpen it and contrast it in photoshop.
