Hey guys:
I am sure a lot of you have solid webpages with solid providers. I have a domain I registered but it is being hosted (for free) by a friend of mine with an ISDN. I am hoping to get a little more bandwidth for my website, which I have not built for that reason. I figured you guys would have some suggestions. Here is what I am thinking... - I want to use my site to have a general gallery for my self and my wife (she is an inferno artist). - I may have my demo reel on it (I know this can tax my download limit) - I would have a "personal" section... pictures of my cats and crap like that. - and I would want a zone where I can post image to show on forums etc... - It would be nice to have remote access so I can just dump stuff into it - I want plenty of good email support with webmail access - I don't want to pay vert much... can I get this for under $10/mounth? - am I looking for somthing that is really solid. no squirel mail which is painfully slow. My questions are: - I need names... give me names of providers. - what should I be looking for? - what amount of space is really needed? - how much d/l limit will be good? - what features are important that I am missing? - How secure are these sites? - What software do you recommend for website building? I am looking REALLY simple... HTML, probably no flash... I am a bit of a minimalist about that, I want the content to speak not the website. Anyway, I figured you guys would know this stuff... Chris

I use ICDsoft (http://www2.icdsoft.com/) and I've been really happy with them. $60/year and I get 333MB storage, 5GB/month bandwidth, unlimited e-mail, and a very useful web interface.
You should also take a look at www.webhostingratings.com for feedback on nearly any host out there. Jack |

Always look for:
1. fair space and bandwidth (500M/1G) 2. Expandability. It should suit your future plans and have some for feature which you may need in near future. 3. GREAT SUPPORT is must. look for 24x7 phone/live support 4. For security you can look for https (secure socket) availability. And it must be a reputed brand for a safer site. I recommend any of : www.brinkster.com (Great features with plenty of softwares) www.1and1.com (the brand - only uk/us) must have some technical knowledge to handle this one www.lunarpages.com (affordable and good) or you can even go with www.ipowerweb.com (perhaps the largest user base) |

I use www.Infinology.com and could not be happier. The customer support is excellent. I only pay $6.95 a month. They have a few deals going on right now.

And to answer your question about software, for your purposes any one would do. But I have had some pretty good success with Adobe GoLive. |

Thanks for the replies guys... keep them coming if you have them. Endorcements are always usefull.
So it seems that for that price of around $6 to $8 a mounth I get around 40GB/mounth. Do any of you have video file links on your page and have found this to be a problem? A friend of mine redid his page added his demo reel, all on his earthlink account. The page got picked up by cgchannel and he went 10 times of his limit in 2 days. Those things scare me. I don't remember how much earthlink allowed, but I am sure it was very little. What about the webmail stuff good? fast? Do you guys use IMAP? If I host my own domain, I am thinking of just goign IMAP since can keep things local. Also, of all these plans, what do you find is usually the first limitation that you get?

Chris,
Use the same host we I use for CGA. http://www.alentus.com Hands down the best host there is. They have shared servers packages for the price range you are looking at and their support is phenomenal. I've been using them for the last 2.5 years and reccomend them to everyone.
