Brian,
I think opacity maps are ok. I did try mapping a tree on one face of the cube and a transparent material on the other polygons of the cube.then aligned the mapped face perpendicular to the camera, just like usual billboards using plane but with a surplus of 5 polygons...just make use of the existing shapes and apply opacity maps and i think it ok with jeff. Its still texturing.. but introducing new planes for a op maps then its a big NO. |

John pretty much summed it up, if you want to add trees on one of the boxes with an opacity map then I'd accept that, but you can't use opacity maps to try to create new shapes.
The intent of the competition is to use the shapes provided and use your creativity and imagination to render an outstanding scene with careful thought to lighting and composition. Just alway keep in the back of your mind...use all the shapes, don't alter the ones you have, and don't try to come up with loopholes in the rules to try to create new ones.
