Default Tim Nelson - WIP 2

Ok, so the 2nd challenge begins! I'm really looking forward to this and seeing what genius ideas people have locked up in their brains. And so begins my wife's 2nd challenge up putting up with me through this .

I've been thinking about this for a while now, but everything is still a little vague in my mind of what I want it to look like. I started a couple of sketches last night. Forgive me for my sloppy drawings, but I still think its the best way for me to get ideas started. I came up with a main shape for a building and then realized it looked a lot like FLW's Guggenheim museum. I don't mind though - mines going to be better than that . The sketch with the tower & all the pods sort of resembles a tree with beehives or something like that. Is it practical, possible, or even a good design? I don't know, but I like it, so I'll probably try to use something like this as one of my main buildings.

The rest will probably be fairly simple, but strong & weighty. I would like to do some retail at the street level, with a bustle of activity with people & cars. I haven't started a master site plan yet, but I would like to do a shot from the center of it all in a park, or something nice, colorful & soft to counter balance the architecture. Borrowing a thought from CHG (travis) who borrowed a thought from Juan...something...I think it would be cool to have at least part of the park covered in shadow from the buildings behind to highlight the larger buildings, and allow for some interior lighting from the retail shops to show.

Anyways, still thoughts at this point...

Next updatate. I am still working on the design for the main building. I have to decide 1) whether I like it or not 2) is it at all realistic? 3) how people get up into it. I have to design some sort of base building at the bottom.

The design for the rest of the buildings will come later.

I think my first thought when I saw your sketch was Calatrava.
My first thought when I saw your initial render was that it feels a bit 'light' - ie where would all the accommodation go (office/housing/retail etc). Its very sculptural and structural. The eternal debate - art or architecture?

Look at Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth, UK.

I'm starting to worry that I might have bitten off more than I can chew. I haven't done much since the last wip and now I'm really having a hard time moving forward. I don't have much experience in this type of environment, so designing the rest of the buildings is tricky for me (I've never rendered anything over 5 stories ) I've thought about starting from scratch at this point and simplifying it a lot, but I still really like the picture in my mind of how I want this to turn out. Guess I'd better decide soon!

Not looking good, considering that the rules for this one say it has to be fully textured, along with everything else. At this point, all I can really hope for is a decent NPR rendering, but I'm afraid that won't quite cut it.

Okeedokee, here's my final! Unfortunately I really didn't find my true inspiration until yesterday, so I did as much as I could between then & now.

What really inspired me the most was looking at old vintage travel posters and seeing the magnificent art & architecture combined into such a unique style. My wips began to remind me of that kind of style, so I starting looking at a bunch of them and just kind of went with the flow.

This particular rendering has sort of an airbrush feel to it, which isn't my usual style, but think it works for this one. The 'verdigo' is just a generic name as a play on vertigo - something that one could likely feel at the very top. I was originally going to title it 'metropolis' but that was taken already.

I would have liked to give some additional texturing to everything, but the time is up & overall I'm satisfied with this since I thought it was going to turn out to be a disaster.

Thanks Alicja. Glad to see you finished the challenge & good to see another competitor comment on my work, even if it is over. I noticed some competitors got a LOT of comments & some got none. Would be nice to see that change.

After a little nap, I decided I don't like the huge title at the bottom & doesn't really have the intended effect. Oh well, too late! Great job to everyone in this round. I am so impressed by all of your work & can tell you truly love what you do.

Hello Tim,

I noticed your progress and I like the color/render style that you chose for challenge two. The design of the tower and title made sense as well.

Great work, and lets keep our fingers crossed for everyone, until the judges and the public make their votes heard.

Thanks, I appreciate it.

It will indeed be interesting to see the results from voting & judging. Since only 22 people finished, I'm sure it's going to be a tough decision for the judges.
