Press Release

Discreet 3ds max Dominates Digital Art Book

3ds max Accounts for Majority of 3D Imagery in EXPOSÉ 1

San Diego, Calif.—SIGGRAPH (BOOTH #2836)—July 28, 2003—Discreet, a division of Autodesk, Inc., is pleased to announce that its 3ds max professional modeling, animation and rendering software was the 3D tool more artists turned to for half of the 3D art in EXPOSÉ 1, the computer graphic industry’s premiere annual art book celebrating the creative talents of digital artists worldwide.

EXPOSÉ consists of artwork covering the fields of 3D, digital illustration, industrial design, and architectural visualization, games, television and feature film. Divided into 2D and 3D art, Discreet 3ds max software accounted for 50% of the 3D imagery across all seven subject categories. Together with Autodesk VIZ software and Discreet 3ds max software, more than two thirds of the images in the design visualization category came from artists using those tools.

EXPOSÉ features the finest digital artwork from artists across the globe, with subject categories including: Character in Action, Character in Repose, Architecture, Environment, Transport, Still Life/Mechanical and Visual Effect. Distiguished judges and editors selected 249 3D images from over 1400 entries with no knowledge of the artists, or software used at the time of selection. After the book had been laid out, Ballistic publishing reported that 50% of the 3D artwork in EXPOSÉ came from artists using Discreet 3ds max as their primary 3D application.

In addition to showcasing the world’s best digital art, the EXPOSÉ AWARDS honors the best artists in a diverse range of categories and styles. The award recipients all demonstrate the astounding fusion of artistic and technical excellence that digital tools provide to the modern artist. 3ds max was credited as the main software used for eight out of 15 3D images winning Master and Excellence Awards—a 53% dominance over all other competitive software tools combined.

“The results speak for themselves. 3D digital artists prefer 3ds max as the most productive and flexible 3D software to help them realize their creative vision, and create quality animations, visualizations and evocative works of art,” says Paul Lypaczewski, General Manager of Discreet and Executive Vice President of Autodesk, Inc. “We are absolutely thrilled that the 3D digital art industry continues to prove that 3ds max is the leading choice for 3D artists worldwide.”

“It was a pleasant surprise for everyone involved in producing EXPOSÉ,” says Dr. Mark Snoswell, CEO of Ballistic Publishing. “Selection was based entirely on the artistic quality of the imagery presented by the artists. We’re ecstatic that 3ds max was used by so many artists to create their impressive submissions that constantly inspire the 3D art community.”

3ds max remains the world’s most popular 3D modeling, animation and rendering solution with over 180,000 users worldwide. The suggested retail price (SRP) for 3ds max is US$3,495.
